Former President Yoon Suk Yeol and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, spent their first Chuseok in jail without any special meal, according to the Ministry of Justice on Monday.
Until last year, the Korea Correctional Service provided inmates with special meals during the mid-autumn harvest festival and the Lunar New Year, as stipulated by the Enforcement Decree of the Act on Execution of Sentences and Treatment of Inmates. However, due to budget cuts this year, the agency ceased offering special food during these occasions.
As a result, Yoon missed another special meal during a traditional festival, having previously spent this year's Lunar New Year in a detention center in January before being temporarily released in March and then detained again in July.
On Thursday, the Seoul Detention Center, where Yoon is held, provided inmates with rice cakes donated by a non-governmental organization. The Southern Detention Center, where Kim is imprisoned, plans to offer apples, bananas, and rice cakes from civic groups later this week.
During the National Foundation Day on October 3, the Seoul Detention Center distributed bags of chestnut snacks, while the Southern Detention Center provided coffee and doughnuts. Each facility will also offer sliced cake and sweets during Hangul Day on October 9.
Additionally, both centers allowed inmates outdoor exercise for a day during the extended holiday, despite a general ban on outdoor exercise during weekends and holidays.
Inmates can also watch live broadcasts of KBS, MBC, SBS, and EBS between 9:15 a.m. and 9 p.m. from October 3 to 9. The former first couple will have the opportunity to watch films including "Back to the Future 2," "Les Miserables," and "In the Mood for Love."
Yoon and Kim are the first former presidential couple to stand trial while being detained. The former president was detained over an insurrection allegation following his failed martial law declaration last December, while the former first lady was arrested in August on charges including stock price manipulation and bribery.
On Thursday, Kim sent a message to her supporters through her lawyers visiting the Southern Detention Center, expressing gratitude for their support and wishing them a happy Chuseok holiday.

그러나 목요일, 윤 전 대통령이 수감된 서울구치소에서는 비정부기구에서 기부한 떡을 수감자들에게 제공했다. 김건희가 수감된 남부구치소는 이번 주 후반 시민단체에서 제공한 사과, 바나나, 떡을 제공할 계획이다.
10월 3일 국경일에는 서울구치소에서 밤밤 간식이 제공되고, 남부구치소에서는 커피와 도넛이 제공됐다. 각 시설에서는 10월 9일 한글날에 케이크와 과자를 제공할 예정이다.
또한, 두 구치소는 연휴 동안 하루 동안 야외 운동을 허용했으며, 일반적으로 구치소에서는 주말과 공휴일에 야외 운동을 금지하고 있다.
수감자들은 10월 3일부터 9일 사이에 오전 9시 15분부터 오후 9시까지 KBS, MBC, SBS, EBS의 생방송을 시청할 수 있으며, 이를 통해 두 전직 대통령 부부는 "백 투 더 퓨처 2", "레미제라블", "러브 인 모드" 등의 영화를 시청할 수 있다.
윤 전 대통령과 김 여사는 구속 상태에서 재판을 받는 첫 전직 대통령 부부이다.
윤 전 대통령은 지난해 12월의 계엄령 선언 실패로 내란 혐의로 구속됐고, 김 여사는 주가 조작 및 뇌물 수수 혐의로 8월에 체포됐다.
목요일, 김 여사는 남부구치소를 방문한 변호사를 통해 지지자들에게 메시지를 전했다.
"여러분의 편지와 지지가 없었다면, 이 긴 어두운 터널을 견딜 수 없었을 것"이라고 그녀의 메시지에는 적혀있다. "행복한 추석 연휴 되시길 바랍니다. 항상 여러분을 위해 기도하겠습니다."
