Eight Chinese nationals were caught attempting to enter South Korea illegally by boat off the country's west coast, the Coast Guard said Monday.
An unidentified boat was reported off the west coast at 11:38 p.m. Sunday and captured at around 1:43 a.m. the following day, approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Gauido Island, according to the Coast Guard.
The small leisure boat carrying the eight individuals was towed to a port in Taean County, South Chungcheong Province.
One passenger jumped into the water during the seizure but was soon rescued, authorities said.
The Coast Guard reported that the group departed from Weihai in eastern Shandong Province at around 10 a.m. Sunday, about 300 km west of South Korea's coast, in an attempt to enter the country illegally to find jobs.
They allegedly disguised themselves as anglers, carrying four fishing rods, food, and water on board.
The Coast Guard stated it plans to seek arrest warrants for the eight on charges of violating the Immigration Control Act.
대한민국 서해안에서 보트로 불법 입국을 시도한 중국 국적의 8명이 해경에 의해 검거됐다.
해경에 따르면, 일요일 오후 11시 38분경 불명의 보트가 서해안에서 발견되었고, 다음 날 오전 1시 43분경, 가우이도에서 북서쪽으로 약 40킬로미터 떨어진 지점에서 검거되었다.
8명을 태운 작은 레저 보트는 충청남도 태안군의 한 항구로 견인되었다.
검거 과정에서 한 승객이 바다로 뛰어들었지만 곧 구조되었다고 당국은 전했다.
해경은 이들이 일요일 오전 10시경 중국 산동성 웨이하이에서 출항하였으며, 한국 해안에서 약 300킬로미터 떨어진 곳에서 불법 입국을 시도하여 일을 찾으려 했다고 밝혔다.
이들은 낚시꾼으로 위장하며, 보트에는 낚싯대 4개, 음식 및 물을 가지고 있었다.
해경은 이들을 Immigration Control Act 위반 혐의로 체포영장을 신청할 계획이라고 밝혔다.
