Nearly a decade after redefining the image of women in the Korean hip-hop scene, Mnet's "Unpretty Rapstar" franchise is returning with a new installment titled "Unpretty Rapstar: HIP POP Princess." The new series builds on the legacy of the original, which aired from 2015 to 2016 and significantly raised the profiles of female rappers such as Jessi, Heize, Cheetah, and Soyeon from i-dle. This time, the competition goes global, featuring 40 contestants—20 from Korea and 20 from Japan—who will aim for a debut spot while seeking to bridge cultural divides through music.
During a press conference in Seoul's Gangnam District, Mnet revealed the creative direction and mentor lineup for the project, emphasizing it as "a cultural dialogue through music." Main producer Jeong Min-seok stated the goal is to create a girl group that embodies the freedom of hip-hop alongside the melodic elements of pop.
Jeong noted, "A decade ago, 'Unpretty Rapstar' showed fearless women competing purely on skill. We wanted to bring that same confidence and raw honesty into a new era." The contestants showcase a variety of backgrounds, including university students and teenage singer-songwriters, with the final members of the girl group yet to be determined.
Among the anticipated figures returning to the franchise is Soyeon from i-dle, who will serve as the emcee rather than a contestant. She expressed her excitement, reflecting on her own journey from being a high-schooler to now guiding others through similar experiences.
Dynamic Duo's Gaeko joins the project as a mentor, acknowledging the high skill level of the contestants, and recalling his own love for the culture upon witnessing their dedication. The Japanese mentor lineup features world-renowned choreographer Rie Hata and Takanori Iwata of the J-pop group Sandaime J Soul Brothers, both of whom aim to provide support and encouragement to the contestants.
This new show also represents a significant collaboration between Korean entertainment company CJ ENM and Japanese advertising agency Hakuhodo through their joint venture Chapter-I, marking an important step towards cross-Asian collaboration in pop production.
