Korea is currently in communication with China to mitigate the impact of Beijing's decision to sanction Hanwha Ocean's U.S.-based subsidiaries, according to a statement from the presidential office on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, China announced retaliatory measures against five U.S.-based subsidiaries of Hanwha Ocean, alleging their involvement in a U.S. investigation concerning China's maritime and shipbuilding sectors.
The presidential office indicated that efforts are underway to minimize harm by activating the Korea-China trade channel for communication and response measures. It was noted that while the potential for additional sanctions remains uncertain, the situation will be closely monitored.
Initial assessments suggest that the immediate impact of the sanctions may be limited, as Hanwha Ocean has few business dealings with Chinese companies. However, officials will evaluate whether these measures could affect Seoul's shipbuilding cooperation initiative with the United States.
China's sanctions include a prohibition on Chinese individuals and organizations from engaging in transactions or cooperation with Hanwha's U.S. units.
