In the film, Byun portrays Jang-won, a national intelligence officer assigned to protect Jae-beom, a presumed billionaire with ties to illegal gambling in the Philippines.
During a car chase, Jang-won, Jae-beom, and others find themselves in a car accident, leading to their unexpected transport to "the intermediate world," a Buddhist concept representing the space between death and rebirth.
In this chaotic realm, they are pursued by Grim Reapers, depicted as the 12 zodiac animals in black-hooded gowns, who aim to eliminate these wandering souls to restore order.
At Jogye Temple in downtown Seoul, the Grim Reapers encounter the Four Heavenly Kings, guardian deities upholding the Dharma, along with Haetae, a mythical creature from Korean folklore believed to protect against disasters. These characters were also created using AI technologies.
While the film is touted as the first feature in the country to extensively utilize AI, the visuals indicate that there remains significant room for improvement.
Despite the excitement surrounding its advanced technology, the film suffers from narrative inconsistencies, failing to clarify critical plot points, such as the sudden conflict between the Four Heavenly Kings and the Grim Reapers, as well as the identity of a powerful elderly man who easily defeats the Grim Reapers.
Directed by Kang Yun-sung, known for works like "Long Live the King" and "The Outlaws," the film concludes with an abrupt ending and a short runtime of one hour, leaving the possibility for a sequel.
Fans of fantasy and action, particularly those interested in the current state of AI technology in film, may find "Run to the West" worth watching, though they may leave the theater with more questions than answers.
