Lotte Group Chairman Shin Dong-bin emphasized the strategic significance of the conglomerate's biopharmaceutical sector during his recent visit to a U.S. biologics facility.
Shin toured Lotte Biologics’ Syracuse Bio Campus in New York, where he inspected the antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) manufacturing facilities. This visit marked his first since the site commenced ADC production in April.
“I expect the Syracuse Bio Campus to serve as a new growth engine, not only for Lotte Biologics but for the entire group,” Shin stated. He highlighted the necessity for the company to enhance its ADC production capabilities and secure additional contracts to bolster its global competitiveness.
The Syracuse facility serves as a crucial manufacturing base for Lotte Biologics, which was founded in 2022 as a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) for biologics.
In 2023, Lotte Biologics acquired the Syracuse plant from another company and invested $100 million to establish ADC production facilities. The plant began full-scale operations in April after securing an ADC supply contract with a biotech firm based in Asia.
The plant is strategically important for Lotte Biologics, especially following the recent announcement of a 100 percent tariff on drug imports by the U.S. administration. Companies with manufacturing facilities in the U.S. are exempt from this tariff, allowing Lotte Biologics to pursue new contracts in the U.S. market without the added burden of tariffs.
The company's focus on ADC technology is also promising, as ADCs are emerging as targeted cancer therapies that deliver drugs directly to tumor cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue.
Lotte Biologics indicated that its ADC manufacturing facilities can offer a comprehensive range of CDMO services, from clinical development to commercial production. The site features integrated production and purification lines, including conjugation reactors with a capacity of up to 1,000 liters, along with analytical characterization services.
As a newcomer in the CDMO sector, Lotte Biologics is also developing a plant in Incheon, aiming for commercial operations to commence in 2027. This year, the company has participated in significant global events, including the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference and BIO USA, and plans to engage potential clients at CPHI Worldwide in Germany and World ADC in the U.S. later this year.
Lotte Group has heavily invested in Lotte Biologics as a new growth driver within its predominantly retail-focused portfolio. Since 2023, the group’s holding company has allocated a total of 624.6 billion won ($454 million) to its affiliates, with Lotte Biologics receiving 72.8 percent of this investment.
Currently, Shin Yoo-yeol, the eldest son of Shin Dong-bin, leads Lotte Biologics' global strategy.

그룹에 따르면, 신 회장은 일요일에 뉴욕의 롯데바이오로직스 시러큐스 바이오 캠퍼스를 방문하고 항체-약물 접합체(ADC) 제조 시설을 점검했다. 이번 방문은 로테바이오로직스가 4월에 ADC 생산을 시작한 이후 처음이다.
신 회장은 "시러큐스 바이오 캠퍼스가 롯데바이오로직스뿐만 아니라 그룹 전체의 새로운 성장 엔진 역할을 할 것으로 기대한다"며 "회사가 ADC 생산 시설을 확장함에 따라 추가 ADC 계약 및 기타 계약 개발 및 제조 주문을 확보하기 위한 노력을 가속화해 글로벌 경쟁력을 강화해야 한다"고 말했다.
시러큐스 공장은 2022년에 설립된 롯데바이오로직스의 주요 제조 기지다. 롯데바이오로직스는 2023년에 브리스톨 마이어스 스퀴브로부터 시러큐스 공장을 인수했고 ADC 생산 시설 건설을 위해 1억 달러를 투자했다. 이 공장은 아시아 기반의 생명공학 회사와 ADC 공급 계약을 체결한 후 4월에 본격 가동을 시작했다.
이 공장은 미국의 트럼프 행정부가 최근 약물 수입에 100% 관세를 부과하고 미국 내 제조 시설이 있는 회사나 건설 중인 회사는 면제하기로 발표함에 따라 롯데바이오로직스에 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 다른 한국 생명공학 회사들이 새로운 관세 리스크에 대비하기 위해 분주하게 움직이고 있는 반면, 시러큐스 공장은 롯데바이오로직스를 외부 충격에서 보호하여 회사가 미국 시장에서 새로운 계약을 적극적으로 추진하도록 하고 있다.
롯데바이오로직스는 ADC에 집중하고 있으며 이는 차세대 표적 암 치료제로서 생명공학 산업의 주목을 받고 있다. ADC는 약물을 종양 세포에 정확하게 전달하면서 건강한 조직은 보호하는 방식이다.
롯데바이오로직스는 임상 개발부터 상업 생산까지 전체 CDMO 서비스를 제공할 수 있는 ADC 생산 시설을 갖추고 있으며, 통합 생산 및 정제 라인을 갖추고 있다. 이 시설은 최대 1,000리터 용량의 접합 반응기를 포함하고 있으며, 분석 특성화 서비스도 제공한다.
CDMO 산업의 새내기로서 롯데바이오로직스는 2027년 상업 운영을 목표로 인천에 자체 공장을 건설 중이다. 올해 롯데바이오로직스는 JP 모건 헬스케어 컨퍼런스, 월드 ADC 아시아, BIO USA 및 BIO 일본 등 주요 글로벌 행사에 참여했다. 또한, 회사는 10월 독일에서 열리는 CPHI Worldwide 및 11월 미국에서 열리는 World ADC에 참여할 계획이다.
롯데그룹은 소매 중심 포트폴리오에서 롯데바이오로직스가 새로운 성장 엔진이 될 것이라고 기대하고 있다. 2023년 이후, 롯데그룹의 지주회사 롯데는 계열사에 총 6,246억 원(4억 5,400만 달러)을 투자했으며 이 중 72.8%가 롯데바이오로직스에 할당되었다. 현재 신 회장의 장남 신유열이 롯데바이오로직스의 글로벌 전략을 총괄하고 있다.
