President Lee Jae Myung and first lady Kim Hea Kyung are facing criticism for appearing on the Chuseok special episode of JTBC’s variety show "Please Take Care of My Refrigerator" amid an ongoing national crisis triggered by a fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS).
In the program, renowned chefs examine the contents of guests’ refrigerators and prepare meals using them. The presidential office explained that the presidential couple’s appearance was planned to promote Korean food.
However, the main opposition party and other critics questioned the appropriateness of the president's participation in the entertainment program during an unprecedented nationwide network outage. The fire at the NIRS facility in Daejeon, which broke out on September 26, disrupted 647 online government services, including key administrative networks.
During the major disruptions, a government official in his 50s who was involved in the recovery effort died in an apparent suicide at the Government Complex Sejong.
The opposition party argued that the president’s participation in the entertainment program during such a national disaster was inappropriate, suggesting he wasted crucial time for public safety and fire recovery while filming. They also linked the controversy to the death of the government official, with a spokesman stating, “While government officials worked overnight to restore the systems, it has come to light that the president and first lady were enjoying themselves on a variety show.”
Additional comments from a party lawmaker claimed the presidential spokesperson issued a false briefing suggesting the opposition's concerns were unfounded and threatened legal action.
In response, the ruling party characterized the criticism as an “excessive political attack.” The presidential office emphasized Lee’s appropriate handling of the situation by releasing a detailed account of his schedule and actions following the fire.
According to the presidential spokesperson, the fire broke out at 8:15 p.m. on September 26, shortly after Lee returned from a U.S. trip. He was reportedly updated continuously on the fire and directed emergency responses.
The spokesperson noted that the program was recorded on the afternoon of September 28, after Lee had presided over an emergency response meeting regarding the fire. Following the recording, he led a meeting of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.
Regarding the official's death, President Lee expressed condolences on social media, acknowledging the official's dedication to public service during the crisis.
The presidential office had also requested that JTBC delay the broadcast of the program, concluding that it was inappropriate to air it during a period of mourning. As a result, the program was rescheduled to air at 10 p.m. on Monday.
