Teenager Rim Jong-un has successfully concluded his first International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Tour competition by leading Korea to victory in the men's relay event in Canada.
On Sunday at Maurice Richard Arena in Montreal, Rim collaborated with teammates Hwang Dae-heon, Lee June-seo, and Shin Dong-min to secure the gold medal in the men's 5,000-meter relay, finishing with a time of 6:50.781. China claimed the silver medal with a time of 6:51.160.
This victory marked Rim's second gold medal in the competition, having previously won the men's 1,500m title on Saturday during his World Tour debut. The 17-year-old also triumphed in the national team trials held in April.
Additionally, on Sunday, Rim earned a silver medal in the men's 1,000m event, placing second to Pietro Sighel of Italy.
Rim participated in the mixed 2,000m relay with teammates Choi Min-jeong, Kim Gil-li, and Lee Jeong-min; however, the Korean team was disqualified after finishing second in the final.
In other results from the day, Kim Gil-li secured her second silver medal of the competition by finishing second in the women's 1,500m, having previously won silver in the 1,000m on Saturday.
This competition was the first of four ISU World Tour events scheduled for the fall, with results impacting quota places for the upcoming 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Quotas are available for the men's and women's 500m, 1,000m, and 1,500m events, as well as the men's and women's relays and the mixed relay.
A total of 32 quota spots are available for the 500m and 1,000m events, and 36 for the 1,500m. The men's and women's relays will offer eight quota places, while the mixed relay event will provide 12 quota places.
Each country can obtain a maximum of three quota places per individual event and one quota place per relay event. Competitors may register three men and three women for individual races, and four men and four women for the relays.
For the mixed relay, priority is given to countries that have at least two male and two female skaters qualified in individual races.
Korea has previously struggled to secure maximum quota spots, notably at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, where the team sent limited participants in various events.
Despite these challenges, Korea holds the record for the most Olympic short track medals, with 26 gold medals and a total of 53 medals overall.
