Music festivals in Korea are often characterized by large crowds, elaborate lighting displays, and strict regulations regarding what attendees can bring and do in various viewing zones. For those who appreciate indie music but find traditional festivals overwhelming, an alternative is available at the end of the Chuseok holiday, focusing on music in a natural setting.
The Picnic Forest music festival will take place at the Bamti Village Campground in Wanju, North Jeolla Province, approximately 20 kilometers east of Jeonju. Scheduled for two days in October, the festival will feature three stages hosting over 40 artists from Korea and abroad, including performers from the recent Jeonju Ultimate Music Festival.
Picnic Forest is set for this Friday and Saturday, running from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. each day. The first day will showcase several bands from Taiwan, including the duo Crossing Road, acoustic group Paradise Lots, and rock band Monkey Power. The headliners for Friday will be the all-woman Korean rock band Walking After U and the hard rock band KBK Uglys.
On Saturday, the lineup will include bands from across Asia, such as the Japanese trio unMARIE's and Taiwanese vocalists Emily Pu and Wang LiYan. The festival will conclude with performances from Korean punk bands NOYA, One Off, and Concord Universe.
Founded by Park In-yeol, owner of a local record label, the festival began 13 years ago as GreenBlue Fest and was renamed Picnic Forest in 2017 to reflect its picnic-like atmosphere. Park expressed concerns about the declining viability of indie music in the commercial landscape, noting that large music festivals continue to thrive while smaller indie events struggle.
The festival will also feature a flea market with handmade goods, home-cooked food, and second-hand items, deliberately excluding large commercial products. There is no fixed ticket price; instead, attendees are encouraged to donate what they feel the event is worth, promoting accessibility.
Park invites attendees to escape the urban environment and embrace nature, emphasizing the enjoyment of indie music and community spirit without external pressures.
Campsites can be reserved from Thursday at 3 p.m. until Sunday at 3 p.m., but attendees must bring their own camping gear, as space is limited. Those without a campsite should arrange transportation, as the final performances will conclude after the last public bus departs.

그는 "요즘 인디 음악은 상업적인 가능성 부족으로 거의 사라졌다"고 전했습니다. 박은 대도시에서 이와 같은 축제 개최가 어렵다고 아쉬움을 나타냈습니다. "반면에 대규모 음악 축제는 계속되고 있다"며 "그런 의미에서 피크닉 포레스트는 인디 뮤지션을 위한 공간이다"라고 덧붙였습니다.

참석자들은 목요일 오후 3시부터 일요일 오후 3시까지 캠프사이트를 예약할 수 있지만, 자신의 캠핑 장비를 지참해야 합니다. 캠프사이트 수는 제한되어 있으니 참고하시기 바랍니다. 캠프사이트가 없는 경우 마지막 공연이 끝난 후 마지막 공공버스가 출발하기 때문에 교통편을 미리 준비해야 합니다.
