Government to End Seoul's Foreign Nanny Program Early Next Year

The government plans to discontinue Seoul's foreign nanny program early next year, which has been under scrutiny for its efficacy and the impact on local employment. The program was originally established to address the childcare needs in the capital, but has faced criticism regarding its sustainability and financial viability.

In a recent announcement, officials stated that the decision to terminate the program comes as part of broader efforts to reassess social welfare policies and focus on strengthening domestic workforce capabilities.

The foreign nanny initiative, which has primarily relied on Filipino caregivers, was initially launched to support families requiring additional childcare resources. However, feedback from participants and the community has prompted a reevaluation of its effectiveness in meeting the original objectives.

As part of a pilot project, new measures are being introduced to facilitate the supply of foreign workers to address family needs in a different framework, although details on the new strategy remain under discussion.

The government intends to ensure a smooth transition for families currently utilizing the program, with plans to provide alternative solutions as it phases out the existing system.
