Ulsan HD lost their opening match to Mamelodi Sundowns FC with a score of 1-0. In contrast, Fluminense played to a goalless draw against Borussia Dortmund earlier the same day, despite outshooting and dominating possession over their opponents.
In the expanded 32-team Club World Cup format, the top two teams from each of the eight groups will progress to the knockout stage. Fluminense and Dortmund are favored to secure those two spots in Group F, and Ulsan's chances of advancing will diminish significantly with another loss. Ulsan will conclude their group stage against Dortmund next week.
Ulsan HD FC has previously claimed the last three titles in K League 1, South Korea's premier football league, while Fluminense earned their place in the Club World Cup by winning the 2023 Copa Libertadores, the top club competition in South America.
