South Korea's military reported on Thursday that a North Korean warship, which partially capsized during a launch ceremony last month, has been restored to an upright position, with ongoing restoration efforts. The incident occurred on May 21 in the northeastern port city of Chongjin, where the 5,000-ton warship tipped over and became partially submerged.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un condemned the incident as an intolerable "criminal act" and mandated the restoration of the warship ahead of a significant party meeting scheduled for late June. Colonel Lee Sung-jun, spokesperson for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), stated during a regular press briefing that the warship returned to an upright position earlier this week, and further restoration efforts are believed to be in progress.
Lee indicated that both South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies are closely monitoring activities at the Chongjin port and surrounding areas. He suggested that the North is likely to first drain the water from the warship to comply with Kim's directive. However, the JCS official did not provide details on whether the North would be able to meet the deadline set by Kim.
