Variety shows featuring senior citizens, often referred to as "silver entertainment," are declining in popularity in South Korea, despite the nation's rapidly aging population.
Programs such as Channel S’s “Grandma Attack” and YouTube’s “My Other Half” were among the most notable in recent years. “Grandma Attack,” which aired from January to July 2022, showcased respected veteran actresses Kim Young-ok, Na Moon-hee, and Park Jung-soo providing advice to younger viewers. Similarly, KBS2’s “Godfather,” which featured Lee Soon-jae, Joo Hyun, and Kim Kap-soo, also premiered that year.
The dating show “My Other Half,” launched on YouTube in 2024, was hosted by comedian Ji Sang-ryeol and actress Oh Hyun-kyung. South Korea was officially recognized as an “aged society” by United Nations standards in 2017, and projections indicate that by December 2024, individuals aged 65 or older will comprise over 20 percent of the population, marking the transition into a “super-aged” society.
Given these demographic changes, there were expectations that silver-themed shows would become more prevalent; however, the opposite trend has been observed.

최근 몇 년간 Channel S의 '할머니 공격'과 유튜브의 '내 다른 반쪽'과 같은 프로그램이 주요 사례로 꼽혔다. '할머니 공격'은 2022년 1월부터 7월까지 방영되었으며, 김영옥, 나문희, 박정수와 같은 저명한 원로 여배우들이 젊은 세대에게 조언을 제공했다. 같은 해 KBS2의 '신부수업'은 이순재, 주현, 김갑수 등이 출연하였다. 2024년에 유튜브에서 처음 방영된 데이팅 쇼 '내 다른 반쪽'은 개그맨 지상렬과 배우 오현경이 진행하였다.
한국은 2017년 UN 기준으로 '노인 사회'가 되었으며, 2024년 12월까지 65세 이상의 인구가 20%를 초과해 '초고령 사회'로 진입하게 된다. 이러한 인구 변화에도 불구하고 실버 테마의 방송은 예상과는 달리 쇠퇴하고 있다.
