Hyundai Steel, the second-largest steel manufacturer in Korea, has announced a temporary shutdown of its No. 2 plant located in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province. This decision, effective from Saturday, comes in response to a prolonged slump in the steel industry, characterized by a significant contraction in demand.
The company cited a lack of production volume as a key reason for the suspension. A company official indicated that future decisions regarding the plant's operations will involve discussions with the labor union.
This latest move represents a reversal from Hyundai Steel's previous stance. In November of the prior year, the company had announced plans to close the plant due to low operational levels but later retracted that decision following considerable opposition from the union. Instead, the company opted to scale down operations.
However, ongoing weakness in global demand, exacerbated by sluggish conditions in the domestic market, has led to the current decision to fully suspend operations at the facility. The company has been facing a challenging business environment throughout the year, including steel tariffs imposed by the U.S. government.

당시 회사는 대신 사업 축소를 결정했으나, 글로벌 수요의 지속적인 약세와 국내 시장의 침체가 겹치면서 이번에는 완전 가동 중단을 하게 되었다. 현대제철은 올해 미국의 철강 관세 등 어려운 사업 환경에 직면해 있다.
