The labor circle demanded Wednesday that next year's minimum wage be set at 11,500 won ($8.43) per hour, reflecting a 14.7 percent increase from this year's rate of 10,030 won.
The proposed hourly minimum wage equates to a monthly wage of 2.4 million won, based on 209 working hours per month or a standard 40-hour work week.
This demand was presented by labor representatives and civic groups during a news conference in Seoul, coinciding with the Minimum Wage Commission's discussions, which began in April. This commission consists of nine representatives each from labor, management, and the general public, tasked with discussing the national minimum hourly wage for 2026.
The labor sector emphasized that the minimum wage should also be extended to include non-regular workers and platform workers.
The management sector has not yet disclosed its minimum wage proposal. South Korea recently increased the minimum hourly wage by 1.7 percent to 10,030 won for the current year, marking it as the second-smallest recorded increase. Last year, the labor sector requested a minimum wage of 12,600 won.

이번 최저임금 요구는 서울에서 열린 기자회견에서 노동 대표와 시민단체에 의해 공개되었으며, 최저임금위원회는 노동, 경영 및 일반 대중 각 9명씩의 대표로 구성된 3자 패널이 2026년 국가 최저시급 인상을 위한 논의를 시작한 이후 이루어졌다.
노동계는 또한 최저임금이 비정규직과 플랫폼 근로자에게도 적용되어야 한다고 말했다.
경영계는 아직 최저임금 요구를 발표하지 않았다.
한국은 올해 최저 시급을 1.7% 인상하여 10,030원으로 책정하였으며, 이는 기록된 두 번째로 작은 증가폭이다.
지난해 노동계는 12,600원의 최저임금 인상을 요구한 바 있다.
