South Korea and the United States completed a two-day round of technical discussions in Washington aimed at laying the groundwork for upcoming negotiations on trade and economic cooperation issues. The discussions took place as South Korea seeks exemptions from newly imposed U.S. tariffs.
Leading the South Korean delegation was Chang Sung-gil, director-general for trade policy at the industry ministry, who met with officials from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). While the specifics of the discussions have not been disclosed, a source indicated that the focus was on establishing the overall framework for future trade talks.
This round of talks followed earlier discussions on April 24, when South Korea’s then Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun engaged in "two-plus-two" trade consultations with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and USTR Jamieson Greer. During those high-level discussions, both parties agreed to work towards a "July package" agreement concerning trade and related issues ahead of July 8, the deadline marking the end of President Trump's 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs.

이들은 또한 한국어로 번역할 내용을 결정하였으며, 향후 진행될 협상에 대한 기대감을 나타냈다.
