The Navy has initiated a test to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing commercial drones and unmanned ships for military operations, officials announced on Wednesday. This marks the first time such a test has been conducted, reflecting the increasing demand for cost-effective weapons in modern warfare.
The test commenced at a research center in Ulsan, located approximately 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, on Monday and is scheduled to run for five days. The objective is to assess the potential deployment of commercial unmanned systems in various contingencies.
During the test, the Navy deployed three unmanned surface ships, ten drones, and a civilian boat. The focus is on verifying methods for using commercial assets in reconnaissance, attack operations against enemy targets, and logistics support.
Among the drones utilized were a fixed-wing drone designed for deep-sea fishing to track tuna schools, a multirotor drone typically used for logistics transportation, and a cardboard drone that can function as a loitering munition, according to Navy officials.
The armed service indicated plans to further explore the integration of commercial unmanned assets for both peacetime and wartime military operations.

해군은 정찰 활동, 적 자산에 대한 공격 작전 및 물류 지원을 위한 방법을 검증하기 위해 세 개의 무인 수상 선박, 10대의 드론, 그리고 민간 보트를 동원했다.
동원된 드론 중에는 참치 떼를 추적하기 위해 심해 어업에 사용되는 고정익 드론, 물류 운송에 일반적으로 사용되는 멀티로터 드론, 그리고 순찰 항공무기로 활용할 수 있는 종이 드론이 포함되어 있다고 해군은 밝혔다.
이 군사 조직은 평시 및 전시 군사 작전에 상업용 무인 자산을 통합할 방법을 계속 모색할 계획이라고 전했다.
