Korea will introduce a new supercomputer from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) under a contract that includes five years of maintenance and repair services, according to the science ministry.
The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) signed a 382.5 billion-won ($270 million) deal with HPE to install the supercomputer by the first half of 2026, as stated in a press release from the Ministry of Science and ICT. This will mark the country's sixth state supercomputer.
"In rapidly changing research and industrial environments, the new supercomputer will offer ultra high-performance computing services to sectors requiring large-scale, high-precision scientific and engineering calculations," the ministry noted. The computing power is also deemed essential for artificial intelligence (AI)-related research projects.
The sixth state-designated supercomputer will be equipped with 8,496 graphic processing units (GPUs) produced by a U.S. chipmaker, delivering a performance capacity of 600 petaflops (PF), according to the ministry. One petaflop (PF) refers to the ability to perform one quadrillion calculations per second.

이번 슈퍼컴퓨터는 한국의 여섯 번째 국가 슈퍼컴퓨터가 될 예정이다. 과학기술부는 "급변하는 연구 및 산업 환경에서 새로운 슈퍼컴퓨터는 대규모 고정밀 과학 및 공학 계산을 요구하는 분야에 초고성능 컴퓨팅 서비스를 제공할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
이러한 컴퓨팅 파워는 인공지능(AI) 관련 연구 프로젝트에도 필수적이라고 덧붙였다.
여섯 번째 국가 지정 슈퍼컴퓨터는 미국 반도체 제조업체 엔비디아가 생산한 8,496개의 그래픽 처리 유닛(GPU)을 장착하여 600 페타플롭(PF)의 성능 용량을 갖출 예정이다.
