Choi Jeong of the SSG Landers made history on Tuesday by becoming the first player in Korean baseball to achieve 500 career home runs. He accomplished this milestone with a two-run home run off Riley Thompson of the NC Dinos at Incheon SSG Landers Field, located just west of Seoul.
At 38 years old, Choi is already recognized as the career home run leader in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). He surpassed the previous record held by Lee Seung-yuop of the Samsung Lions when he hit his 468th home run on April 24 of last year. Coming into the current season, he needed five more home runs to reach 500 but faced a setback due to a hamstring injury that sidelined him for approximately a month.
Choi made his season debut on May 2, hitting a home run, followed by additional home runs on May 4 and 5. He moved to within one home run of the milestone after hitting a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth inning during a 5-4 loss to the Kia Tigers on Saturday, setting the stage for his historic achievement on Tuesday.
In the game, Choi batted third as the designated hitter and grounded out to second base in his first at-bat before hitting the milestone home run later in the game.
