Judges nationwide are set to convene an extraordinary meeting later this month to address the controversy surrounding presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung's election law violation case, according to a judges' association announcement on Friday.
The meeting is scheduled for May 26 at the Judicial Research and Training Institute in Goyang, located northwest of Seoul. The association requested the gathering from its chair, Judge Kim Ye-young of the Seoul Southern District Court, emphasizing the need to discuss and clarify their stance on concerns regarding the courts' political neutrality and the potential erosion of public confidence in the judiciary.
The controversy intensified following the Supreme Court's swift decision last week to remand Lee's case to the Seoul High Court for retrial, citing errors in the previous acquittal regarding charges of making false statements during the 2021 presidential campaign.
Lee's political party, the liberal Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), criticized the Supreme Court's decision as an interference in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for June 3, noting that a guilty verdict could disqualify him from participating in the race.

지난주 대법원이 이 후보의 사건을 서울고등법원으로 되돌려 보내기로 한 결정은 이례적으로 신속하게 이루어졌으며, 2021년 이전 대선에서 허위 사실을 진술한 혐의에 대한 무죄 판결에서 오류를 지적한 바 있다.
이 후보의 소속정당인 더불어민주당은 이번 결정을 6월 3일 예정된 대선에 대한 간섭으로 간주하며 강하게 반발하고 있다. 유죄 판결이 내려질 경우 이 후보는 이번 대선에 출마할 수 없게 된다.
