Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung congratulated Cardinal Robert Prevost on his election as the new pope of the Roman Catholic Church, expressing hopes that the new pontiff will promote peace on the Korean Peninsula.
In a Facebook post, Lee congratulated Pope Leo XIV, noted as the first American pontiff, and acknowledged his dedication to social justice and love for neighbors. Lee stated, "I congratulate Pope Leo XIV on his election, together with all Catholic believers."
Lee emphasized his prayers for the new pope to advance global peace and continue the legacy of his predecessors in fostering reconciliation between North and South Korea, which remain technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean War concluded with a truce rather than a peace treaty.
"I hope the new pope will play a major role in peace on the Korean Peninsula," Lee remarked. He further highlighted Seoul's upcoming hosting of World Youth Day in 2027, expressing hope that the event will provide an opportunity to promote peace.

이 후보는 새로운 교황이 세계 평화를 증진하고, 남북한의 화해 및 한반도의 전쟁 종식을 위해 노력한 그의 전임자들의 유산을 이어가기를 기도하겠다고 덧붙였다. 현재 남북한은 1950-53년 한국전쟁 이후 정전 상태에 있으며, 평화 조약이 체결되지 않았다.
그는 "새로운 교황이 한반도 평화에 중요한 역할을 하기를 바란다"고 말했다. 2027년 서울에서 세계 청소년의 날이 개최될 예정인 가운데, 이 후보는 국제 가톨릭 행사로 한반도에 대한 관심이 높아지기를 희망한다고 밝혔다.
