The Korea Development Bank (KDB) is set to launch a new branch in Hanoi, Vietnam, nearly six years after submitting its application, according to industry officials.
The State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) confirmed on Wednesday that it has received KDB's application, which is viewed as a de facto preliminary approval and a significant step in the establishment of a foreign bank branch.
This development follows a lengthy delay, primarily due to the SBV's concerns regarding the excessive number of banks in Vietnam relative to the size of its economy. The SBV had placed new applications on hold for an extended period, citing the need for restructuring within the financial system.
Additionally, the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) is also awaiting confirmation for its application submitted in July 2017 to establish a local banking subsidiary in Vietnam. IBK currently operates two branches in the country, located in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
The Korean government has reportedly engaged in active financial diplomacy to support the expansion of its banking institutions in Vietnam.

베트남 중앙은행(State Bank of Vietnam, SBV)은 수요일에 KDB의 지점 설립 신청서를 접수했음을 확인하는 공문을 발송했다. 이는 외국 은행 지점 설립 과정에서 실질적인 사전 승인을 의미하는 중요한 절차다.
KDB의 지점 개설 신청은 2019년 7월에 제출된 뒤 약 6년의 시간을 거쳤으며, 그 지연은 베트남 내 은행 수가 경제 규모에 비해 과도하다는 SBV의 우려에서 비롯된 것으로 분석된다.
SBV는 금융 시스템 재구성을 위해 새로운 신청을 장기간 중단해온 바 있다. 또한, 산업은행(IBK)도 2017년 7월에 베트남에 지역 은행 자회사 설립을 위한 신청서를 제출한 이후 확인서를 기다리고 있다. IBK는 현재 하노이와 호치민시에 각각 하나씩 두 개의 지점을 운영하고 있다.
