The project to construct a new airport on Gadeok Island in Busan is expected to miss its 2029 completion deadline, following the government's decision to terminate its contract with the preferred contractor.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on Thursday that it has begun the process of halting negotiations with Hyundai E&C. The contractor proposed a construction timeline of 108 months, which exceeds the original requirement of 84 months outlined in the bidding conditions.
The consortium, which includes Daewoo E&C and POSCO E&C, requested the extended timeline after the ministry requested improvements to the basic design plan submitted on April 28. In response to the government's goal of completing the airport within 84 months, the consortium indicated that an additional 17 months would be necessary to reinforce the site's soft ground, along with an extra seven months for seawall construction.
After reviewing the consortium's request, the ministry opted to terminate the partnership, leading experts to express skepticism about the feasibility of completing the project within the government's original timeline, given its complexity.

대우건설과 포스코건설이 공동으로 주도하는 컨소시엄은 4월 28일 정부가 제출한 기본 설계 개선을 요청한 뒤 연장된 기간을 요청했다. 정부가 84개월 이내의 공항 완공을 목표로 하자, 컨소시엄은 부드러운 지반을 보강하는 데 17개월, 해안 보강 공사에 추가로 7개월이 더 필요하다고 설명했다.
요청을 검토한 국토교통부는 컨소시엄과의 파트너십을 종료하기로 결정했다. 전문가들은 프로젝트의 복잡성으로 미뤄볼 때 정부의 목표인 2029년 내 완공은 어려울 것이라고 주장하고 있다.
