<p>The government apologized on Thursday over the police’s alleged mishandling of a high-profile murder case in Gwangju and announced plans for wide-ranging reforms to prevent similar issues in the future.</p>
<p>In an address to the nation, the interior minister acknowledged allegations that police in Gwangju leaked investigative material to the murder suspect’s father, who is also a police officer in the city, and pledged to address the matter as a grave concern.</p>
<p>He stated that the government would root out corruption within the police and overhaul the investigative system to restore public trust, which has waned due to perceived shoddy and cover-up investigations.</p>
<p>The case has become politically prominent amid scrutiny of police collusion during a supplementary investigation by prosecutors, occurring as the ruling party seeks to change prosecution powers related to supplementary investigations.</p>
<p>The suspect, 23-year-old Jang Yoon-gi, is accused of fatally shooting a 16-year-old girl and attempting to kill a 17-year-old boy on May 5.</p>
<p>The interior minister announced measures to prevent collusion, including a full-scale rotational assignment system for police and the introduction of voluntary disclosure and recusal procedures to deter officers from shielding colleagues or associates.</p>

서울 정부청사에서 열린 국무회의에서 내무부 장관 윤호중은 광주에서 벌어진 살인 사건 관련 경찰이 수사 자료를 피의자 아버지인 광주 경찰관에게 누설했다는 혐의와 관련한 논란에 대해 언급했다.
그는 “국민의 생명과 안전을 책임지는 내무부 장관으로서 피해자 가족에게 깊은 유감과 위로를 표하고 국민께 걱정을 끼친 점에 대해 사과한다”고 말했다.
또한 “정부는 이 사건을 중대한 사안으로 다루며 경찰 내 부패를 뿌리 뽑고 수사 시스템을 철저히 개혁해 형편없고 은폐된 수사 아래 무너진 국민 신뢰를 회복하겠다”고 덧붙였다.
사건과 수사는 검찰의 보강 수사 과정에서 경찰 간부 간의 공모 의혹이 드러나며 정파적 쟁점이 되고 있다. 여당이 보강 수사 권한의 축소를 추진하는 가운데 벌어진 일이다.
용의자는 23세의 장윤기으로 5월 5일 16세 여고생을 살해하고 17세 남학생을 살해하려 한 혐의를 받고 있다.
윤 장관은 “이번 사건의 책임자뿐 아니라 경찰 내 모든 부패한 경찰관이 경찰 내에 발 붙이지 못하도록 할 것”이라고 말했다.
먼저 정부는 경찰 간의 공모를 차단하기 위해 전면적인 순환 배치 제도를 도입하고 자발적 공개와 기피 제도를 도입해 서로를 두둔하고 친인척에게 유리한 관행을 뿌리 뽑겠다"고 밝혔다.
