<p>The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and SK Biopharmaceuticals are partnering to help Korean biotech firms expand into the United States, reinforcing Korea’s presence in the world’s largest biotechnology market.</p>
<p>The collaboration follows a record year for Korea’s biopharma exports, which reached $16.4 billion in 2025, highlighting the sector’s growing global competitiveness.</p>
<p>KOTRA announced a memorandum of understanding with SK Biopharmaceuticals and the New York-New Jersey chapter of the Korean American Society in Biotech and Pharmaceuticals (KASBP) to establish a local U.S. collaboration framework. This builds on K-bio’s global initiatives and SK’s existing co-growth program for smaller firms by providing on-the-ground support in the United States.</p>
<p>Under the partnership, SK will offer office space via its U.S. subsidiary SK Life Science and share its U.S. market expertise. KOTRA, KHIDI, and Hallym University will focus on recruiting promising companies, facilitating partnerships with local firms, and delivering consulting, investor outreach, and networking opportunities tailored to the U.S. biotech ecosystem.</p>
<p>The United States is Korea’s largest pharmaceutical export market, accounting for about 18% of Korea’s drug exports, with growth in biosimilars and CDMO services. Regulatory hurdles, certification requirements, and tariff uncertainties remain challenges for Korean companies.</p>
<p>To address these barriers, KOTRA plans to leverage the K-bio desk, operating across seven U.S. trade offices including New York, to provide regulatory guidance, intellectual property consulting, and targeted marketing support.</p>

최근 한국 보건산업진흥원(KHIDI) 및 한림대학교와의 협력으로 K-바이오 글로벌 이노베이션 링스(K-Bio Global Innovation LinX) 이니셔티브를 국내에서 시작한 데 이어, KOTRA는 금요일 SK 바이오팜 및 한미생물의 한미생물의 생명공학 협회(KASBP) 뉴욕-뉴저지 지부와 양해각서를 체결해 미국 내 현지 협력 프레임워크를 구축하기로 했다.
KOTRA 김경성 사장은 “미국을 비롯한 세계 선진 시장에서 K-바이오 수출과 글로벌 위상이 주목받고 있다”고 말했다. 또한 “공공-민간이 하나의 팀으로 국내외에서 협력하게 됨에 따라 대기업뿐 아니라 글로벌 확장을 모색하는 혁신 생명공학 기업들에도 최대의 지원을 제공하겠다”고 강조했다.
이번 파트너십은 SK의 중소기업 공동성장 프로그램의 범위를 미국 현지 지원까지 확대하는 형태로 추진된다. SK는 미국 자회사 SK 라이프 사이언스의 오피스 공간을 제공하고 자사 미국 시장 경험에서 얻은 운영 노하우를 공유한다.
KOTRA는 KHIDI, 한림대학교와 함께 유망 기업 발굴 및 현지 기업과의 파트너십 촉진에 집중하고, 미국 생명공학 생태계에 맞춘 컨설팅, 투자자 유치 및 네트워킹 기회도 제공할 예정이다.
미국은 한국의 최대 의약품 수출 목적지로, 의약품 수출의 18%를 차지한다. 한국의 생명공학 물품은 특히 바이오시밀러와 위탁개발생산(CDMO) 서비스에서 미국으로의 수출이 크게 증가하고 있다.
다만 규제 절차, 인증 요건, 관세 불확실성 등의 요인으로 한국 기업에 여전히 장벽이 존재한다. 이를 해결하기 위해 KOTRA는 뉴욕을 포함한 미국 7개 무역사무소에서 운영 중인 K-바이오 데스크를 활용해 규제 안내, 지적재산권 컨설팅 및 타깃 마케팅 지원을 제공할 계획이다.
