LIG Defense & Aerospace (D&A) has opened its first local subsidiary in the United States, LIG Defense U.S., to strengthen cooperation with the U.S. Navy and pursue local partnerships and technology exchanges as it seeks to access the largest defense market.
Retired U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Richard Brown has been appointed chief adviser to the U.S. subsidiary, positioning the company to enhance collaboration with the U.S. Navy and expand its business reach.
Brown, a former commander of Naval Surface Forces at the U.S. Pacific Fleet, is seen as well-suited to bolster cooperation and broaden opportunities for LIG D&A in the American defense sector.
LIG has established local offices in several regions, including Colombia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Europe, and the U.S. subsidiary is expected to further boost its international operations.
Previously, LIG D&A gained U.S. recognition after its Poniard guided rocket completed a final performance test under the U.S. Foreign Comparative Testing program during the Rim of the Pacific Exercise near Hawaii in July 2024, raising expectations for its integration into U.S. weapons systems.
According to Shin Ick-hyun, CEO of LIG D&A, the U.S. subsidiary marks a continued effort to position the company as a partner to the U.S. defense industry and to act as a bridgehead for Korea-U.S. defense cooperation.

LIG는 글로벌 네트워크를 구축하기 위해 콜롬비아, 아랍에미리트, 사우디아라비아, 인도네시아, 말레이시아를 비롯한 주요 대상 국가와 유럽에 현지 사무소를 운영해 왔다. 미국 자회사의 출범은 국제 사업을 더욱 강화할 것으로 기대된다. LIG D&A는 2024년 7월 하와이 인근 해역에서 열린 Rim of the Pacific Exercise 기간 중 미 Foreign Comparative Testing 프로그램의 최종 성능 시험을 성공적으로 마친 Poniard 유도로켓으로 미국의 인정을 이미 얻었다. 이 성과는 한국에서 “빅웅(Bigung)”으로 불리는 이 무기가 미국의 무기 시스템에 통합될 가능성에 대한 기대를 높였다. 이종환 LIG D&A CEO는 “미국 자회사의 설립은 미국 방산 산업의 진정한 파트너로 자리매김하려는 LIG D&A의 노력이 반영된 것”이라며 “한미 방위 협력을 위한 교두보로서 역할을 다하기 위해 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
