The appearance of the Rising Sun flag during a World Baseball Classic (WBC) game between Korea and Japan at Tokyo Dome drew criticism after Japanese spectators were seen displaying the symbol in the stands.
The flag, linked to Japan’s imperial military past, is viewed by many in Asia as a reminder of colonial aggression, including Japan’s 35-year rule over Korea.
The incident occurred during the 2026 WBC match on Saturday. A professor at Sungshin Women’s University said he sent a protest to the tournament organizers after reports showed several Japanese fans waving the flag before entering the stadium.
He stated on social media that some Japanese fans were openly displaying the flag and cheering before entry, arguing that the Rising Sun flag symbolizes militarism and imperialism and undermines the history of Japan’s past wars of aggression.
The controversy recalls a similar incident in the 2023 WBC, also held at Tokyo Dome, when the same flag was shown in the stands. The flag has repeatedly drawn international criticism in sports, with FIFA taking action to stop its display during the Qatar World Cup.
The advocate urged WBC organizers to ban the flag at games and to implement strong measures to prevent recurrence.

“라이징 선 깃발은 일본의 군국주의와 제국주의의 상징이다. 이를 들고 환호하는 행위는 일본의 과거 침략 전쟁의 역사를 부정하고 많은 아시아인들에게 전쟁의 공포를 상기시킨다.”
이 논란은 2023년 WBC에서도 같은 깃발이 관중석에 등장한 일본과 한국의 경기와도 맥을 같이 한다. 또한 국제 스포츠에서 라이징 선 깃발 사용은 반복적으로 비판을 받아왔다. FIFA는 카타르 월드컵에서 일본 관중들의 깃발 사용을 신속히 제지했다.
서 교수는 WBC 주최 측에 유사한 조치를 취할 것을 촉구했다.
“WBC 경기에서 라이징 선 깃발의 사용을 금지하고 재발 방지를 위한 강력한 조치를 취해달라”고 서 교수는 말했다.
