Two utility groups have reached a preliminary agreement to settle their legal dispute over payments related to the Barakah nuclear power plant project in the United Arab Emirates, according to informed sources.
The decision was reportedly discussed at the boards of the two companies about a month after the government ministry urged a domestic settlement to reduce costs, shorten litigation, and mitigate risks to proprietary nuclear technologies.
The dispute has been in arbitration at the London Court of International Arbitration, with the ministry advising a shift to a Korean arbitration body to resolve the matter regionally.
Officials cited potential cost benefits, a shorter dispute period, and the risk of leakage of nuclear technology as reasons for preferring a domestic settlement, and urged the formation of a consultative body to negotiate a resolution.
The two entities have been in dispute since last year over additional construction costs incurred during the joint Barakah project, which involved building four reactors in the UAE.
The Barakah project, valued at about 20 trillion won, marked the first overseas nuclear power venture for the country.
In May, one party filed an arbitration claim against the other with the LCIA, seeking reimbursement for additional costs alleged to have arisen from delays and extra work orders attributed to the UAE and the other company.

한국전력공사(KEPCO)와 한국수력원자력(KHNP)이 아랍에미리트(UAE) 원자력 발전소 프로젝트와 관련된 지급 문제에 대해 국내에서 해결하기로 예비 합의에 도달했다고 소식통이 금요일 밝혔다.
해당 결정은 최근 양사의 이사회에서 보고됐으며, 무역·산업자원부가 국내 해결을 요청한 지 약 한 달 만에 이뤄진 것으로 소식에 정통한 관계자들에 따르면 전해졌다.
