TOKYO — Korea manager Ryu Ji-hyun said his faith in the squad did not waver after a narrow loss to Japan in the World Baseball Classic on Saturday, following an 11-4 win over Czechia in Pool C play earlier in the week.
Korea led 3-0 but fell 8-6 to Japan, failing to pad a bases-loaded opportunity in the eighth inning.
Korea has a quick turnaround to face Chinese Taipei at noon Sunday at the Tokyo Dome, and Ryu expressed confidence that fatigue would not be a factor.
“We knew the schedule all along, and I didn’t see anything out of norm from my players. I trust that my players will play a good game today,” Ryu said.
Ryu emphasized that a single loss would not derail the team’s approach or resolve, saying the core group would not collapse after the setback.
He praised captain Lee Jung-hoo for rallying the team and delivering timely pregame guidance, and stressed that players must unite and compete as one in important games.
Ryu made lineup adjustments for the matchup with Chinese Taipei, moving Moon Bo-gyeong to the No. 5 spot and swapping positions with Shay Whitcomb, who had homered against Czechia but went 0-for-4 versus Japan. Moon will also serve as designated hitter, with Whitcomb moving to first base and Kim Do-yeong transitioning from DH to third base.
Moon left Sunday’s game briefly after colliding with the fence while pursuing a foul ball, with the coach noting lingering back discomfort.
Kim Do-yeong, who has led off for Korea in the tournament, said he is pleased with his performance at the plate and aims to provide more energy in upcoming games after starting the Japan contest with a leadoff single that helped fuel a three-run first inning.
