Korea rolled out its first KF-21 Boramae fighter jet to come off the assembly line, marking the culmination of a 25-year development program and signaling the start of mass production in the country’s defense industry.
A ceremony in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, highlighted the achievement as part of the nation’s effort to enhance self-reliance in national defense, with attendance by government officials, military personnel, industry executives and foreign representatives.
The project has been led by domestic engineers in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including the defense sector and the Air Force, tracing its origins to a 2001 initiative. The event underscored Korea’s aim to become one of the world’s top four defense-industrial nations and to expand investment in related technologies such as engines, materials and components.
Officials emphasized that the KF-21’s performance, cost efficiency and airframe versatility have attracted international attention and that Korea plans to share its technology and development experience with partner countries, contributing to global peace and prosperity.
The program showcased Korea’s defense-industry competitiveness from design through full production, including developments in radar, targeting, and electronic warfare capabilities integrated into the fighter jet.
25년 간의 개발 프로그램의 정점이자 우리나라 방위산업의 새 장을 여는 가운데, 국내에서 처음으로 조립 라인을 벗어난 KF-21 보라매 전투기가 첫 생산을 마쳤다.
수도권이 아닌 사천에서 열린 양산 착수식에 참석한 이재명 대통령은 국내 개발 전용 전투기 양산의 시작을 축하하며 국가 방위 자립에 대한 오랜 염원이 성과를 냈다고 강조했다.
사천은 지난 25년 동안 이 프로젝트를 공동으로 주도해 온 방위기업인 한국항공우주산업(KAI)과 한화에어로스페이스, 한화시스템, 공군 및 국방과학연구소 등 관계자들이 모인 곳이다.
대통령은 KF-21의 성공을 ‘단단한 토대’로 삼아 국가의 방위산업 강국 도약 비전에 따라 관련 산업에 대한 투자를 확장하고 협력 파트를 다각화하겠다고 밝혔다.
대통령은 “전투기는 오랜 기간 우리 민족의 자주 국방에 대한 간절한 염원을 구현한 것”이라며 대국의 자주 국방 역량 강화를 상징한다고 말했다.
450명 이상이 참석한 가운데 공군 조종사, 방위기업 임직원, 공군사관학교 생도 및 14개국 대사 등 다양한 인사들이 자리를 함께했다.
개최식은 대량생산 시작의 결과가 25년에 걸친 긴 여정의 결과물이며 수많은 이들의 땀과 노력이 한 데 모인 것이라고 평가되었다고 대통령은 말했다. 또한 이 프로젝트는 2001년 김대중 대통령이 제시한 사업으로 시작되었다고 지적했다.
KF-21은 세계 주요 방산국들과 당당히 견줄 수 있는 새 추진력을 확보했다는 점을 시사한다고도 덧붙였다.
대통령은 이 성공을 한국이 세계 4대 방위산업 강국 중 하나로 도약하기 위한 견고한 토대로 활용하겠다고 강조했다.
정부는 또한 고도 항공기 엔진, 소재 및 부품 개발에 대한 투자를 신속히 확대하겠다며 산업 성장의 지속 가능성을 확보하겠다고 밝혔다.
글로벌 무대에서도 KF-21은 뛰어난 성능과 낮은 유지비, 다목적 기체 플랫폼의 고기능성으로 주목받고 있다고 말했다.
대통령은 앞으로도 우리의 세계적 무기 시스템 뿐만 아니라 기술력과 개발 경험도 파트너 국가들과 공유하겠다며 한국을 세계 평화와 번영에 기여하는 국가로 발전시켜 나가겠다고 마무리했다.
KF-21 사업은 설계 단계에서부터 첫 시제품 제작(2021년) 및 양산에 이르기까지 국내 엔지니어가 주도적으로 수행했고, 이 과정에서 능동형 전자스캔 배열 레이더, 적외선 검색 및 추적, 전자광학 표적화 시스템, 집적 전장전술 기술 등 글로벌 경쟁력을 보여주는 기술들이 개발되었다.
