Iran’s Embassy in Mexico said it is negotiating with FIFA to relocate the country’s World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, following remarks by the U.S. president that questioned Iran’s safety at the tournament.
It was not clear whether talks are taking place with FIFA, which did not respond to requests for comment. Iranian officials previously said safety decisions for the team depend on FIFA and the United States, the tournament hosts.
The embassy quoted a statement attributed to the Iranian soccer federation president, noting a desire to move Iran’s group-stage matches to Mexico to safeguard players and officials.
The statement cited concerns that, given U.S. assurances about security, Iran would not travel to America while the U.S. president questioned the safety environment for the team.
The World Cup is co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Iran was slated to play New Zealand and Belgium in California, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle.
Moving the games would be an unprecedented shift less than three months before the tournament.
The U.S. president had previously suggested Iran could attend the World Cup, but that the decision would depend on safety considerations.
Iran has shown mixed signals about participation amid regional tensions and attacks by the U.S. and Israel that targeted government leadership and other officials.
Iran’s sports ministry and government comments have varied, with some officials saying participation depended on safety conditions and FIFA’s responsibility as organizer.
Iran is a popular national team with a history of World Cup participation and is ranked among the top teams in Asia.
