During a visit to production facilities in Changwon, Stephen Fuhr, Canada's secretary of state for defense procurement, was presented with an integrated ground defense solution proposed by a Korean defense contractor.
Fuhr's trip followed a tour of a shipyard in Geoje the previous day as Canada evaluates Korea's defense industry capabilities ahead of its indirect fire modernization program. Canada plans to deploy about 250 infantry fighting vehicles by 2030, six years earlier than originally scheduled.
About 30 members of the Canadian delegation toured production lines for the K9 self-propelled howitzer and the Chunmoo MRLS, and observed live mobility demonstrations of the K9, the Redback armored fighting vehicle, and the K21 infantry fighting vehicle.
During the visit, the contractor proposed an integrated firepower and maneuver solution combining the K9 self-propelled howitzers, the MRLS, and the Redback vehicle. The K9 is operated by more than 10 countries, including NATO members.
The company also proposed a partnership to build a local defense industry ecosystem in Canada, citing its experience in Australia, where it established a manufacturing base in Geelong near Melbourne in August 2024. The operation aims to create local jobs and enable technology transfer through a dedicated center of excellence for armored vehicles.
“We aim to become Canada's leading partner in its military modernization program by leveraging our decades of technological expertise and proven track record in meeting delivery schedules,” said Son Jae-il, president and chief executive officer.
Fuhr said the visit to the facilities would serve as an important opportunity to further develop defense cooperation between the two countries.
On Monday, he visited the shipyard to review its shipbuilding capabilities as Canada seeks a supplier for a major submarine acquisition project. The contractor and a German partner were shortlisted for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project, valued at about 60 trillion won ($41 billion), with finalists required to submit proposals by March.

해당 방문은 창원에 위치한 생산시설 방문에 앞서 전날 거제의 조선소를 둘러본 뒤 이뤄졌다.
방문 목적은 캐나다가 추진 중인 간접 화력 현대화(IFM) 이니셔티브에 대비한 한국 방위산업의 역량을 평가하기 위한 것이었다.
캐나다는 2030년까지 약 250대의 보병전투차를 배치할 계획이며, 이는 원래 계획보다 6년 앞당겨진 수치다.
약 30명으로 구성된 캐나다 측 대표단은 K9 자주포와 춘무 MRLS의 생산 라인을 방문하고 K9, 레드백 장갑전투차, K21 보병전투차의 실차 이동 시연도 관찰했다.
방문 기간 한국 방위기업은 K9 자주포, MRLS, 레드백 차량을 결합한 통합 화력 및 기동 솔루션의 제안을 제시했다.
K9 자주포는 10개국 이상에서 운용되며, 이 가운데 6개 국은 NATO 회원이다.
또한 현지 방위산업 생태계 조성을 위한 파트너십 구축을 제안했고, 호주에서의 현지 진출 경험을 근거로 들었다.
해당 방위기업은 멜버른 인근 Geelong에서 제조 거점을 2024년 8월에 설립해 현지 고용을 창출하고 기술 이전을 가능하게 했다.
기업은 수십 년의 기술력과 납기 준수 실적을 바탕으로 캐나다의 군 현대화 프로그램에서 선도적 파트너가 되겠다고 밝혔다.
이번 방문은 양국 간 방위 협력을 더욱 발전시키는 중요한 기회로 평가됐다.
월요일에는 거제의 선박 건조 기지를 방문해 선박 건조 역량을 점검했고, 캐나다가 주요 잠수함 도입 사업의 공급업체를 선정하려 한다는 점도 확인됐다.
지난여름 CPSP의 후보로 독일계 선박제조사와 국내의 해양방산 업체가 선정되었으며, 최종 제안은 3월까지 제출해야 한다.
해당 프로젝트의 규모는 약 60조 원으로 평가된다.
