A new study indicates that women's preferences in men may change significantly after menopause. Many middle-aged and postmenopausal women reportedly show less interest in youthful "pretty-boy" looks or heavily muscular bodies, favoring instead slimmer, bearded men with a more mature appearance.
Researchers from Wroclaw Medical University in Poland and other institutions assessed the attractiveness perceptions of 122 women aged 19 to 70, with findings published in the December issue of the international journal “Adaptive Human Behavior and Physiology.” The study utilized digital imaging to modify male facial masculinity and femininity, beard volume, and muscle mass, asking participants to rate attractiveness across various body-type categories.
The study categorized male attractiveness into three groups. The first group was the “feminized face” type, akin to actors with fair skin and soft features, often referred to as "flower-boy" figures. The second category was the “muscular build” type, characterized by broad shoulders and prominent muscles, traditionally associated with genetic fitness. The third category was the “bearded and slim” type, which, while not conventionally handsome, conveys maturity and individuality through a slender frame and fuller facial hair.
Younger women of reproductive age tended to prefer softer facial features or strong muscular builds, aligning with evolutionary-psychology theories linking attraction to health and genetic strength. However, older and postmenopausal participants displayed a marked shift in preference, showing less enthusiasm for youthful, polished faces and highly muscular bodies, instead favoring slim, bearded men with a calmer appearance.
Researchers noted that as women age, beards may be viewed not just as a physical trait but as a symbol of maturity, stability, and social competence. Conversely, highly sculpted muscles, associated with youth and competition, were rated as less appealing among menopausal participants.
The findings are linked to the “grandmother hypothesis,” which suggests that as women move beyond childbearing, their priorities shift from reproductive traits to valuing emotional security, reliability, and caregiving partnerships—qualities perceived in leaner, older-looking, bearded men. The study concludes that women's perceptions of male attractiveness are dynamic, evolving across the life cycle in response to age, experience, and social context.
