LG Twins manager Youm Kyoung-youb highlighted a crucial home run from Park Hae-min as the turning point in his team's opening victory of the South Korean baseball championship series on Sunday.
The Twins defeated the Hanwha Eagles 8-2 in Game 1 of the Korean Series at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. The Twins recorded seven hits, with Shin Min-jae contributing three of them, but it was Park's solo home run in the fifth inning that Youm identified as a key moment.
This home run marked only Park's third in 31 postseason games and his third in 144 regular-season games this year. The blast extended the Twins' lead to 3-0, alleviating pressure from the rest of the lineup, according to Youm.
"Hae-min's home run in the fifth was really important. We needed some add-on runs at that point, and he lifted some pressure off the rest of the lineup," Youm stated. "I didn't see that home run coming."
In addition to his offensive contributions, Park, an accomplished defensive outfielder in the Korea Baseball Organization, made an impressive running catch in center field during the first inning, although Youm expressed a preference for Park's home run.
"I think this win will give us some confidence for the rest of the series," the manager added.
Youm also discussed his team's effective offense, which capitalized on the opportunity to score eight runs from seven hits and six walks, attributing this success to thorough preparation and analysis of opposing pitchers.
In a last-minute adjustment, Youm announced that Im Chan-kyu would start Game 2 instead of Yonny Chirinos, who experienced side spasms but is expected to return for Game 3 or Game 4.
Eagles manager Kim Kyung-moon expressed disappointment over the six walks issued by his pitchers, acknowledging the Twins' experience as defending champions.
"They played a tidy game like the team that recently won a title," Kim remarked. He emphasized the need for his hitters to perform better in the upcoming game and rejected the idea of fatigue as an excuse for their performance.
"The players might be fatigued, but that really shouldn't be an excuse when you're in the Korean Series," Kim added. "We only have a few games left in the year, and we will try to make sure fatigue won't be an issue for us going forward."
