The LG Twins secured a decisive 8-2 victory over the Hanwha Eagles in the opening game of the Korean Series, held at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Sunday. The win was marked by a strong offensive performance and effective pitching.
Shin Min-jae led the Twins' offense with three hits, three runs, and two RBIs. Starting pitcher Anders Tolhurst contributed significantly, striking out seven batters over six innings while allowing only two runs. The game attracted a sellout crowd of 23,750, emphasizing the importance of the first game in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) championship round.
Historically, teams winning the first game have claimed the Korean Series title approximately 73 percent of the time. The Twins are aiming for their second KBO championship in three years, having ended a 29-year title drought in 2023. In contrast, the Eagles are seeking their first title since 1999 and are participating in their first championship round since 2006.
The Twins began their scoring in the bottom of the first inning, with Hong Chang-ki drawing a walk and Shin Min-jae hitting an infield single. A wild pitch from Eagles' starter Moon Dong-ju allowed both runners to advance, leading to Hong scoring on a grounder by Kim Hyun-soo. Moon Bo-gyeong then doubled to left-center, bringing Shin home and establishing a 2-0 lead.
Despite some early challenges, Tolhurst managed to maintain control, retiring eight consecutive batters at one point. The Eagles threatened in the fifth inning but failed to capitalize, with Tolhurst striking out Son Ah-seop to end the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Park Hae-min extended the Twins' lead to 3-0 with a solo home run, followed by Shin Min-jae tripling and scoring on a fielder's choice, making it 4-0 after Moon Dong-ju was replaced on the mound.
The Eagles responded in the sixth inning, narrowing the Twins' lead to 4-2 with runs from Luis Liberato and Roh Si-hwan. However, the Twins answered back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four additional runs against the Eagles' bullpen, including a two-run single from Shin Min-jae and RBIs from Kim Hyun-soo and Moon Bo-gyeong.
After Tolhurst's six innings, the Twins' bullpen maintained their lead with three hitless innings. The Twins will aim for a 2-0 series lead in Game 2, with right-hander Im Chan-kyu starting for them. Im has had a strong season against the Eagles, while the Eagles will counter with left-hander Ryu Hyun-jin, who has also performed well against the Twins this season.
