Michael ByungJu Kim, chairman of MBK Partners and the largest shareholder of Homeplus, made his first appearance at a National Assembly audit on Tuesday, where he offered a public apology regarding the corporate rehabilitation case of the second-largest supermarket chain in the country.
During the audit held by the Assembly’s National Policy Committee, he stated, “We regret causing concern to the public,” emphasizing the firm’s commitment to fulfilling its social responsibility toward Homeplus employees and stakeholders.
Homeplus filed for corporate rehabilitation in March due to a liquidity crunch and has been unable to find a new owner for over seven months. The situation has garnered national attention, especially following the decision to close 15 stores nationwide that could not reach rental agreements, which has resulted in a strong backlash from local residents.
In addition to the Homeplus situation, MBK Partners has been involved in other notable matters, including a management rights dispute with Korea Zinc and criticism over a hacking incident involving Lotte Card, which the firm owns.
Despite facing scrutiny, Kim had previously skipped requests to appear at the National Assembly due to overseas business trips, which led to public disapproval and heightened anticipation for his appearance on Tuesday.
During the audit, Representative Lee Kang-ill of the Democratic Party of Korea criticized MBK, stating, “The Homeplus crisis stems from MBK’s aggressive leveraged buyout and lack of a clear management strategy. Yet the firm continues to call for government support while using Homeplus’ small business owners and supermarket workers as leverage.”
Lee also noted that MBK has consistently promised investment and growth when acquiring companies, but has largely focused on recouping its own funds.
In response, Kim said, “I will carefully consider your remarks.”
MBK Vice Chairman Kim Kwang-il, who accompanied the chairman, stated that all claims from small business owners have been fully settled following Homeplus’ corporate rehabilitation, with only claims from large corporations and financial creditors remaining, assuring that they are committed to completing the repayment process.
On the day prior to the audit, MBK announced the launch of its social responsibility committee, which will begin operations on October 22. The committee will oversee investment activities to ensure compliance with social responsibility standards and evaluate the impact on stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, and business partners.

홈플러스는 3월에 유동성 위기 상황으로 기업 회생을 신청했으며, 새로운 소유자를 확보하지 못한 지 7개월이 넘었다.
이 상황은 전국적으로 큰 관심을 받았으며, 임대 계약에 실패한 15개 매장 폐쇄 결정이 지역 주민들의 강한 반발을 일으켰다.
홈플러스 사건 외에도 MBK는 한국아연과의 경영권 분쟁에 연루되어 있으며, 여기서 영풍과 힘을 합쳐 최윤범 회장을 퇴출하려 했다. 또한, MBK가 소유한 롯데카드 해킹 사건에 대한 비판도 받았다.
그럼에도 불구하고 미국 시민인 김 회장은 해외 출장 등을 이유로 국회 출석 요청을 여러 차례 거부해 대중의 비판을 받았으며, 화요일 참석은 많은 기대를 모았다.
감사 중 더불어민주당의 이강일 의원은 "홈플러스 위기는 MBK의 공격적인 레버리지 인수와 명확한 경영 전략의 부재에서 비롯되었다. 그러나 MBK는 홈플러스의 소상공인과 슈퍼마켓 근로자들을 이용하여 정부 지원을 계속 요구하고 있다"고 지적했다.
이어 이 의원은 MBK가 두산 기계공구 인수 시 투자와 성장을 약속했으나, 주로 자금을 회수하는 데 집중하고 있다고 주장했다.
김 회장은 "의견을 면밀히 검토하겠다"며 간단히 응답했다.
김 회장을 동행한 MBK 부회장 김광일은 "홈플러스의 기업 회생 이후 소상공인들의 모든 청구가 완전히 해결됐다. 다만 대기업과 금융채권자들의 청구만 남았으며, 이를 성공적으로 완결해 상환을 보장할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
감사 전날인 월요일, MBK는 사회적 책임 위원회의 공식 출범을 발표했으며, 이 위원회는 10월 22일부터 운영에 들어간다.
회사는 이 위원회가 투자 활동을 감독하고 사회적 책임 기준을 충족하며 주주, 직원, 고객 및 비즈니스 파트너 등 이해관계자에 대한 영향을 평가할 것이라고 밝혔다.
