The LPGA Tour is set to host its annual event in Korea this week, featuring a picturesque course on the southern coast that will welcome major champions and local stars over four days.
The sixth edition of the BMW Ladies Championship will commence on Thursday at Pine Beach Golf Links in Haenam, located approximately 330 kilometers south of Seoul in South Jeolla Province.
This 72-hole tournament will include 78 players competing for a total purse of $2.3 million, with the champion receiving $345,000. Notably, there will be no cut in this year's event.
Pine Beach Golf Links, known for its scenic views with several greens and tee boxes situated along the beach and atop seaside cliffs, will host the tournament for the first time. The course is celebrated for its challenging layout, featuring sloping fairways and daunting bunkers.
The LPGA and BMW Korea have rotated the tournament's location since its inception, with the first two editions held in the southeastern port city of Busan in 2019 and 2021. The 2020 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, the tournament took place in Wonju, about 85 km east of Seoul, followed by Paju, northwest of Seoul, hosting the subsequent two editions.
Korean players claimed victory in the first two editions, with Jang Hana winning in 2019 and Ko Jin-young in 2021. The champions for 2022 and 2023 were Lydia Ko of New Zealand and Minjee Lee of Australia, both of Korean descent. Last year, Australian player Hannah Green secured her first win in Korea.
Green returns this week in hopes of becoming the first repeat champion of the tournament. She is among three former champions participating, alongside Lee and Ko Jin-young.
Lee, who triumphed at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in June, is one of four players with a major title this season, joining U.S. Women's Open champion Maja Stark, Amundi Evian Championship winner Grace Kim, and AIG Women's Open champion Miyu Yamashita.
The Korean representation includes Ko Jin-young, currently ranked No. 18 in the world with two major titles, as well as Kim Hyo-joo, the top-ranked Korean player at No. 8; Ryu Hae-ran, ranked No. 12 and the 2023 LPGA Rookie of the Year; and Kim A-lim, the 2020 U.S. Women's Open champion.
Kim Hyo-joo, Kim A-lim, and Ryu have all secured LPGA tournament victories this season, while Ko will be aiming for her first title since May 2023.

LPGA와 BMW 코리아는 대회를 부산에서 처음 개최한 2019년과 2021년 이후, 대회를 국내 여러 지역으로 옮겨 진행해왔다. 2020년 대회는 COVID-19 팬데믹으로 인해 취소되었다.
2022년에는 서울에서 약 85킬로미터 동쪽에 위치한 원주에서 대회를 개최하였고, 이후 서울 서북쪽의 파주에서 두 차례 진행되었다.
첫 두 회의 챔피언은 한국 선수였으며, 2019년에는 장하나, 2021년에는 고진영이 우승했다. 2022년과 2023년에는 한국계 선수인 뉴질랜드의 리디아 고와 호주의 민지리 각각이 챔피언이 되었다.
지난해 호주의 한나 그린이 한국에서 처음으로 우승한 바 있다.
그린은 이번 주 다시 참가하여 대회에서 처음으로 연속 우승에 도전하고 있으며, 이 대회에 출전하는 세 명의 전 챔피언 중 한 명이다. 또한 리와 고진영도 함께 출전한다.
6월 KPMG 여자 PGA 챔피언십에서 우승한 이가 이 대회에 출전하며, 현재 시즌 중 주요 타이틀을 가진 선수 네 명 중 한 명이다. 이들은 미국 여자 오픈 챔피언 마야 스타크, 아문디 에비앙 챔피언십 우승자 그레이스 킴, AIG 여자 오픈 챔피언 미유 야마시타와 함께한다.
세계 랭킹 18위이자 두 개의 주요 타이틀을 보유한 고진영 외에도, 세계 8위의 한국 1위 선수 김효주, 세계 12위이자 2023 LPGA 신인상 수상자인 류해란, 2020년 미국 여자 오픈 챔피언 김아림이 한국 선수로 출전한다.
김효주, 김아림, 류해란은 모두 이번 시즌 LPGA 대회에서 우승했으며, 고진영은 2023년 5월 이후 첫 타이틀을 노리고 있다.
