The Hanwha Eagles are set to begin their first Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason series in seven years, with Triple Crown winner Cody Ponce taking the mound on Friday.
The Eagles will face the Samsung Lions in a best-of-five series, with the Lions starting Gerson Garabito, a key midseason acquisition.
Game 1 of the second round is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon.
Ponce, a strong candidate for regular-season MVP, achieved the Triple Crown in his inaugural KBO season, leading the league with 17 wins, a 1.89 ERA, and a record 252 strikeouts. He lost only one game and set a record for the longest winning streak by a pitcher at the start of a season with 17 consecutive wins.
Although Ponce's performance declined somewhat during the August-September period, he has had over two weeks to rest and prepare for this series, as the Eagles earned a bye as the No. 2 seed.
In his only regular-season appearance against the Lions on July 30, Ponce allowed six hits— all singles— over six scoreless innings, striking out eight and walking one. Kim Seong-yoon was the only Lion to record multiple hits off Ponce in that game.
Ponce will also face Lewin Diaz, who led the regular season with 50 home runs and a league-record 158 RBIs. Diaz was named series MVP in the first round after driving in six runs in a four-game victory over the SSG Landers, including a decisive two-run home run in the eighth inning of Game 4.
Garabito joined the Lions in June, replacing Denyi Reyes in the rotation. In 15 starts, he recorded a 4-4 record with a 2.64 ERA and struck out 84 batters in 78 1/3 innings. He had two scoreless outings against the Eagles during the regular season, allowing just one hit over five shutout innings in his KBO debut on June 26, and five singles over six scoreless frames on July 29.
Roh Si-hwan, who led the Eagles with career highs of 32 home runs and 101 RBIs, was the only Eagle to achieve more than one hit off Garabito in those two games combined.
As the No. 2 seed, the Eagles will have home field advantage, hosting Game 2 at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Daejeon. The series will then move to the Lions' home in Daegu for Game 3 at 6:30 p.m. on Monday and, if necessary, Game 4 at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
If the series extends to a fifth game, the Eagles will host the deciding match at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday.

이글스는 가라비토와의 두 경기에서 조희원의 32홈런과 101타점이라는 개인 최고 기록에 따라 2명의 안타가 기록된 유일한 선수였다.
2위 시드인 이글스는 홈 필드의 이점을 가지게 되며, 게임 2는 토요일 오후 2시에 대전에서 진행된다. 이후 시리즈는 월요일 오후 6시 30분 대구에 위치한 라이온즈의 홈구장으로 이동해 게임 3과, 필요시 화요일 오후 6시 40분에 게임 4가 진행된다.
시리즈가 최종전으로 이어질 경우, 이글스는 다음 주 목요일 오후 6시 30분에 결정적인 경기를 개최한다.
