Korean peacekeeping troops in Lebanon and South Sudan continue to contribute to global peace through various activities, including combined training and taekwondo lessons for civilians, as the U.N. Command (UNC) commemorates its 75th anniversary this year.
Korea has deployed troops to the Dongmyeong unit as part of the U.N. Interim Forces in Lebanon and the Hanbit unit for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. These deployments aim to honor the dedication of troops that served under the U.N. flag, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
The role of the Korean peacekeeping units has gained attention as the U.S.-led multinational command celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.
During a ceremony marking this milestone last month, the Defense Minister stated that Korea's recovery from a war-torn nation was made possible by the UNC and troops from 22 nations, emphasizing a commitment to uphold the spirit of solidarity and support peace efforts with the international community.
The Dongmyeong unit, deployed in 2007, aims to enhance regional stability through continuous surveillance against illegal weapons and armed forces, as well as combined training for peacekeeping operations.
This unit, whose name means "east light" in Korean, has engaged in numerous community support activities, including the establishment of infrastructure such as solar-powered street lights and water purification facilities, along with offering taekwondo and Korean language lessons.
"The peace mission carried out by the Republic of Korea Armed Forces is not merely a military mission. It is a military mission, a civil mission, and a humanitarian mission," stated the mayor of the Lebanese city of Tyre, expressing gratitude for the street light installations.
The Hanbit unit was first deployed to South Sudan in 2013, following the country's independence in 2011.
Over the past 12 years, the unit has conducted humanitarian maintenance work on roads totaling 2,800 kilometers and constructed barrier walls measuring 17 kilometers to mitigate flooding during rainy seasons.
Additionally, the unit has established a farm and a vocational school, providing training in skills such as agriculture, plumbing, and carpentry to assist local residents in settling down and securing food resources. To date, approximately 700 individuals have completed courses offered by the school.

레바논 타이어市 시장 하산 드부크는 "대한민국 군이 수행하는 평화 임무는 단순한 군사 임무가 아니다. 군사 임무이자 시민 임무, 인도적 임무이다"라고 말하며, 부대의 가로등 설치에 감사의 뜻을 전했습니다.
한빛부대는 2011년 남수단 독립 이후 2013년에 처음으로 배치되었습니다.
지난 12년 동안 이 부대는 2,800킬로미터에 걸친 도로의 인도적 유지보수를 수행하고, 우기 동안 홍수를 방지하기 위해 17킬로미터에 이르는 방벽을 건설하였습니다.
또한 지역 주민들이 정착하고 식량 자원을 확보할 수 있도록 농장과 직업 학교를 설립하여 농업, 배관, 목공 등의 기술 교육을 실시하고 있습니다. 현재까지 약 700명이 해당 학교의 과정을 이수하였습니다.
