Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja attended a court hearing on Wednesday regarding a potential arrest warrant linked to bribery charges involving former first lady Kim Keon Hee.
The hearing took place at the Seoul Central District Court, following a request from special counsel Min Joong-ki's team for the warrant based on allegations of violations of the Political Funds Act, anti-graft law breaches, subornation of evidence destruction, and embezzlement.
A decision from the court is anticipated late Monday or early Tuesday.
Han arrived at the court in a wheelchair and did not respond to questions from reporters.
She is accused of collaborating with a former church official to deliver 100 million won (approximately $72,400) to People Power Party (PPP) Representative Kweon Seong-dong in 2022, in exchange for political favors for the church following Yoon Suk Yeol's presidential election victory that year.
Additionally, Han is suspected of gifting a luxury necklace and Chanel bags to Yoon's wife, Kim, while soliciting favors, embezzling church funds for these purchases, and instructing Yun to destroy evidence ahead of a police investigation into her alleged overseas gambling.
The warrant does not address allegations regarding the church's purported efforts to enroll numerous followers as PPP members to support Kweon's leadership bid in 2023. The special counsel has indicated the need to ascertain when these memberships occurred and whether the individuals had voting rights.
A separate hearing for an arrest warrant for Han's former chief of staff will occur at the same court at 4 p.m., as she is implicated as an accomplice in many of the crimes attributed to Han.
The church has denied Han's involvement in the alleged offenses, asserting that they were the actions of the former church official alone.
Despite previously declining three summonses from the special counsel due to health issues following a heart procedure, Han voluntarily appeared for questioning, likely influenced by Kweon's arrest earlier that day on charges of receiving the 100 million won.

한 씨는 2022년에 교회 전 관계자 윤 씨와 공모하여 1억 원(약 72,400달러)을 국민의힘 권성동 의원에게 건네주고, 윤석열의 대통령 당선 시 교회를 위해 도움을 요청한 혐의를 받고 있다. 윤 씨는 이후 선거에서 승리했다.
한 씨는 또한 윤의 아내 김 씨에게 명품 목걸이와 샤넬 가방을 선물하면서 부탁을 요청하고, 선물을 구매하기 위해 교회 자금을 횡령하며, 경찰의 해외 도박 수사에 앞서 윤 씨에게 증거 파기를 지시한 혐의도 받는다.
이번 구속영장에는 교회가 수천 명의 신도들에게 국민의힘에 가입하도록 하여 권성동의 당대표 후보 해달라는 지원을 요청했다는 주장은 포함되지 않았다.
특검팀은 회원 가입이 이루어진 정확한 날짜와 이들이 투표권을 가졌는지 여부를 확인할 필요성을 언급했다.
한 씨의 전 비서실장인 정 씨에 대한 별도의 구속영장 심리는 같은 날 오후 4시에 같은 법원에서 열릴 예정이다. 정 씨는 한 씨가 저지른 대부분의 범죄에 공범으로 지명됐다.
교회 측은 한 씨가 범죄에 연루되었다는 주장을 부인하며, 이는 전 교회 관계자에 의해 단독으로 이루어진 것이라고 밝혔다.
한 씨는 수요일 자발적으로 질문을 받았지만, 건강 문제를 이유로 특검팀의 세 차례 소환은 불응했다.
특검팀은 권 의원이 이날 1억 원을 받은 혐의로 체포된 영향으로 그녀가 출석한 것일 가능성이 있다고 언급했다.
