It has been six months since K-pop girl group NewJeans last made an official move, and more than a year since the group released new music. Their ongoing contract dispute with label Ador continues to prolong their absence from the industry.
Since their debut in 2022, a hiatus of this length seemed unlikely. Their first single, “Attention,” quickly became a cultural phenomenon, launching them into stardom.
Subsequent hits such as “Hype Boy,” “Cookie,” “Ditto,” “OMG,” “Super Shy,” “ETA,” “Cool With You,” “Get Up,” and “New Jeans” solidified their status as a leading act in the fourth-generation girl group scene and one of K-pop’s top groups overall.
The turning point occurred in April last year when a conflict arose between former Ador CEO Min Hee-jin and parent company HYBE. What began as a management dispute escalated into a lengthy legal battle.
NewJeans, often referred to as “Min’s daughters,” sided with Min and announced their intention to terminate their exclusive contract with Ador. Despite multiple settlement offers, the group rejected the idea of returning, launched new social media accounts, and revealed a provisional new name, NJZ, with plans for a comeback.
However, these plans were halted when a Seoul court in March upheld Ador’s request for an injunction that prohibited the group from signing advertising deals and engaging in music-related activities outside of Ador.
The five members testified in court regarding alleged discriminatory treatment by Ador, but the judges ruled that the agency had fulfilled most of its contractual obligations, preventing the group from proceeding independently. Two appeals were subsequently dismissed.
In response, NewJeans refused to return to Ador and announced an indefinite suspension of their activities. Since then, their schedule has been limited to a few pre-existing commitments, with no new releases or major appearances, and even their third anniversary passed quietly.
The pressing question now is not whether NewJeans will return, but whether they can regain their former dominance in a rapidly evolving K-pop market.
During their absence, other fourth-generation groups have ascended to top-tier status both domestically and internationally, while newer fifth-generation acts are quickly expanding their presence.
Fan loyalty has also become fragmented, with some fans disappointed by the court’s ruling and others shifting their support to active groups.
While NewJeans still maintains a passionate international fan base, the prolonged legal battle—potentially lasting years—may hinder their ability to retain the same level of influence.
Industry observers largely agree that a return to Ador now seems nearly impossible, leaving the group’s future uncertain and their previously unbroken momentum stalled.

다섯 멤버들은 아도르에 의해 차별적 대우를 받았다고 법정에서 증언했지만, 판사들은 소속사가 대부분의 계약 의무를 이행했다고 판결하여 그룹이 독립적으로 활동할 수 없게 되었다. 두 번의 항소도 기각되었다.
뉴진스는 아도르로의 복귀를 거부하고 무기한 활동 중단을 발표했다. 이후 그들의 일정은 몇 가지 기존 commitments로 제한되었으며, 새로운 발표나 주요 출연은 없었다. 심지어 그들의 3주년 또한 조용히 지나갔다.
현재의 주요 질문은 뉴진스가 복귀할 것인가가 아니라, 빠르게 변화하는 K-pop 시장에서 예전의 우위를 되찾을 수 있을 것인가이다.
그들의 부재 속에서 다른 4세대 그룹들이 국내외에서 최상위 지위로 상승했으며, 뉴세대 5세대 그룹들은 빠르게 존재감을 확장하고 있다.
팬들의 충성심도 분산되었고, 일부는 법원의 판결에 실망한 반면, 다른 팬들은 활동 중인 그룹에게 지지를 옮기고 있다.
뉴진스는 여전히 열정적인 국제 팬층을 보유하고 있지만, 법적 분쟁이 길어질수록 — 잠재적으로 몇 년 간 — 같은 수준의 영향력을 유지하기가 어려울 수 있다.
업계 관찰자들은 ADOR로의 복귀가 거의 불가능하다고 널리 동의하고 있으며, 그룹의 미래는 불확실하고 한때 중단 없는 모멘텀은 정체된 상태다.
