Korea will host the 19th edition of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Climbing World Championships for the first time starting this weekend, with local athletes competing for medals in front of enthusiastic crowds.
The event will take place from Sunday to September 28 at Olympic Park in southeastern Seoul, featuring over 1,000 climbers from approximately 60 nations.
Qualifications for the lead, speed, and boulder events will occur at Haneol Plaza within the park, while all final competitions will be held at KSPO Dome.
Korea secured the right to host this championship during the IFSC General Assembly in Singapore in 2023. The country will be represented by 11 female and 11 male climbers across all three disciplines.
Among the prominent competitors are Seo Chae-hyun, the world No. 1 in women's lead and the 2021 world lead champion; Lee Do-hyun, the world No. 2 in men's boulder and a bronze medalist in 2023; and Jeong Ji-min, who is ranked third in the women's speed this season and recently won a silver medal at a World Cup event.
Seo expressed her commitment to performing to the best of her ability, stating, "I will try to put on my best performance possible and not make mistakes," and emphasized focusing on her climbs without worrying about other competitors.
Veteran climber Kim Ja-in will participate in the lead event. A two-time world champion with 31 World Cup titles, Kim, at age 37, will be the oldest competitor. She noted that this may be her last world championship but wants to continue climbing beyond the event.
Kim remarked, "For me, it's not about trying to win a medal. I am just honored to be here as a climber. My primary goal is to reach the final," and highlighted her desire to inspire younger climbers.
In the lead discipline, climbers aim to ascend as high as possible on a 15-meter wall within six minutes. The boulder event involves completing the most routes in the fewest attempts on 4-meter walls within a set timeframe, while speed competitors strive to be the fastest to the top of a 15-meter wall.
The championships will commence with lead qualifications on Sunday, with the first medals to be awarded on Wednesday in women's speed and Thursday in men's speed. Finals for both men and women's lead will take place on Friday, followed by the women's boulder final on September 27 and the men's boulder final on September 28.

IFSC는 1991년에 첫 세계 선수권 대회를 개최하였으며, 한국은 2023년 싱가포르에서 열린 IFSC 총회에서 제19회 대회 유치를 확정했다.
한국은 11명의 여성 및 11명의 남성 클라이머를 각 종목에 파견할 예정이다. 메달 후보로는 여성 리드 세계 1위인 서채현과 2021년 세계 리드 챔피언; 남성 볼더 세계 2위인 이도현과 2023년 세계 볼더 동메달리스트; 그리고 이번 시즌 여성 스피드 세계 3위인 정지민이 최근 월드컵에서 은메달을 차지한 바 있다.
서채현은 지난 8월 국가대표 팀 기자회견에서 “최선을 다해 실수를 하지 않도록 하겠다. 다른 클라이머들을 걱정하지 않고 내 클라임에 집중하겠다”고 밝혔다.
베테랑 클라이머 김자인은 리드 종목에 출전한다. 31개의 월드컵 타이틀을 보유한 두 번의 세계 챔피언인 김은 37세로 서울에서 가장 나이가 많은 클라이머가 될 예정이다. 이번 세계 선수권 대회가 마지막이 될 수 있지만, 김은 지난 달 이 대회 이후에도 계속 클라이밍을 하고 싶다는 뜻을 전했다.
그녀는 “나에게는 메달을 따는 것이 중요하지 않다. 클라이머로서 이곳에 있는 것 자체가 영광이다. 내 주 목표는 결승에 진출하는 것이다”라고 언급하며 “여기서 가장 나이 많은 선수로서 쉽지 않겠지만, 젊은 클라이머들에게 영감을 주고 싶다. 제가 즉시 은퇴한다고 해도 그렇게 이상한 일은 아니겠지만, 이번 대회가 마지막 경기는 아니다”라고 말했다.
리드 종목에서는 클라이머들이 6분 안에 15미터 벽을 따라 가능한 높은 곳에 오르는 것이 목표이다.
볼더 종목은 클라이머들이 문제를 해결하는 미션을 수행하게 되며, 주어진 시간 내에 가능한 최소한의 시도로 가장 많은 루트를 완주하는 것이 목표이다.
스피드 종목의 경우, 15미터 벽의 정점에 가장 빨리 도달하는 것이 목표이다.
대회는 일요일 리드 예선으로 시작되며, 첫 메달은 수요일 여성 스피드에서 수여되고, 남성 스피드는 목요일에 이어진다.
리드 결승은 금요일에 남녀 모두 진행되며, 여성 볼더 결승은 9월 27일, 남성 볼더 결승은 9월 28일에 열린다.
