Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) striker Son Heung-min has been named Major League Soccer's Player of the Matchday following his first hat trick in the league. This announcement was made by MLS on its website, recognizing Son's impressive performance in the game against Real Salt Lake on Matchday 34.
During the match, Son scored two goals in the first half and added another in the second half, contributing to LAFC's substantial victory in Utah. This hat trick marked his fifth goal in six appearances in MLS.
In those six matches, LAFC has recorded three wins, one loss, and two draws. Son's achievement places him among a select group of players in LAFC history, as he becomes the third player, along with Adama Diomande and Carlos Vela, to score five or more goals in their first six games. Additionally, he is the seventh player in LAFC's history to achieve a hat trick.
LAFC is set to face Real Salt Lake again in Los Angeles on Sunday evening. A win or draw in this match would secure LAFC’s fourth consecutive appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
In MLS, the nine highest-ranked teams from each of the Eastern and Western conferences qualify for the playoffs, with the top seven in each conference receiving a first-round bye. Currently, LAFC is positioned fourth in the Western Conference with 47 points and holds two matches in hand over the top two teams, San Diego FC and Minnesota United FC.
The MLS Player of the Matchday is determined through a voting process where 75 percent of the votes come from members of the North American Soccer Reporters and 25 percent from fan votes on Instagram.
