Electric vehicle (EV) battery maker LG Energy Solution is expanding its operations to include battery maintenance solutions and energy storage systems (ESS), moving beyond its traditional focus on EVs.
This strategic expansion aligns with the company's vision, announced last year, to diversify its business into software and services. Key initiatives include the development of battery management systems, which are becoming essential for ensuring battery safety, and the establishment of a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ecosystem that encompasses battery leasing, rentals, and recycling.
Currently, the company operates B.around, a brand dedicated to comprehensive business management solutions. This platform enhances existing battery management capabilities by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies to provide real-time diagnostics on battery safety, remaining life, and degradation. Additionally, B.around supports software-defined vehicles.
According to the company, B.around has improved its algorithm by incorporating data from various EV battery cells, achieving a prognosis accuracy margin of less than two percent, which it claims is the lowest in the industry.
Another service offered is B-Lifecare, which enables EV users to monitor their battery's condition through a smartphone app and a home device designed for data collection.
The company's battery technologies are also being utilized in the robotics sector. In November, it entered into a memorandum of understanding with a developer of autonomous driving mobility platforms to supply battery cells and collaborate on technological advancements.
Over the past year, LG Energy Solution has engaged in ESS construction projects across North America and Europe, covering a range of applications from household systems to power distribution networks.
A company official stated, "We will not only rely on EVs but also advance new growth engines. Banking on AI, we will continue to develop software and service businesses to escape the EV chasm."
