Upcoming Netflix movie "Mantis" expands the universe of the 2023 action thriller "Kill Boksoon," focusing on a new generation of contract killers.
Director Lee Tae-sung stated during a press conference in Seoul that the film is a spin-off featuring Mantis, a character briefly mentioned in "Kill Boksoon." He noted that due to the actions of Gil Bok-soon, the killer organization M.K. ENT is in chaos. Lee emphasized that while Gil Bok-soon and Cha Min-kyu were top figures of their generation, "Mantis" explores the stories of younger generation killers.
The action movie portrays the competition for supremacy in the contract killing industry among Han-ul, an A-list killer also known as Mantis, who returns from vacation; his trainee rival Jae-yi; and retired killer Dok-go.
Lee explained that he co-wrote the script with director Byun Sung-hyun, aiming to depict the aftermath of the collapse of M.K. ENT due to Gil Bok-soon's actions. He expressed that co-writing with Byun was a cautious process, as they took time to align their creative visions for the narrative.
Yim Si-wan, who plays Han-ul, described his character as wielding dual sickles, a detail contributing to his name. He mentioned dedicating significant time at action school to master the use of this weapon.
Co-stars Park Gyu-young and Jo Woo-jin also focused on their action sequences. Park, portraying Jae-yi, practiced extensively to handle a long sword, while Jo, who plays Dok-go, highlighted his character's mastery of various weapons, including the tonfa, and planned to deliver visually engaging fight scenes.
Mantis will be available for streaming starting Friday.

이태성 감독은 서울에 있는 한 극장에서 열린 기자회견에서 "길복순의 스핀오프 작품으로, '길복순'에서 약 두 번 언급된 만티스가 휴가 중이라는 이야기"라고 밝혔다. "길복순(전도연) 때문에 M.K. ENT(킬러 조직)는 혼란 상태에 빠졌다"고 덧붙였다.
"길복순과 차민규(설경구)가 그 세대의 최고 인물이라면, 본 작품은 젊은 세대 킬러들의 이야기를 담고 있다."
"만티스"는 휴가 후 돌아온 A급 킬러 한울(임시완)과 그의 훈련생이자 라이벌인 재이(박규영), 은퇴한 킬러 독고(조우진) 간의 계약 킬러 산업의 정점에 대한 대결을 그린 액션 영화이다.
이 감독은 "길복순으로 인해 M.K. ENT가 붕괴된 뒤 어떤 일이 벌어지는지에 대한 이야기를 하고 싶었다"고 설명했다. "변성현 감독과 함께 대본을 공동 집필한 적이 없어서 조심스러웠고, 서로의 생각을 이해하는 데 충분한 시간을 투자했다"고 말했다.
임시완은 자신의 캐릭터를 낫으로 싸우는 인물로 묘사했다. "한울은 두 손에 낫을 들고 싸운다. 그래서 만티스라는 이름이 붙여졌다고 생각한다"고 전했다.
그는 "이중 낫을 무기로 사용하는 경험이 없어 액션 학교에서 무기를 다루는 데 많은 시간을 할애했다"고 덧붙였다.
박규영과 조우진은 각각 긴 검과 통파를 사용하여 독특한 전투 장면을 선보이기 위해 액션 연습에 집중했다고 밝혔다.
박규영은 "재이의 무기는 긴 검이다. 액션 감독들이 긴 선을 이용한 동작 디자인을 했다. 긴 검은 보기에 비해 무겁고 끝이 흔들리는 경향이 있어 액션 학교에서 많이 연습했다"고 말했다.
조우진은 "독고는 통파를 다루지만, 그는 자유롭게 어떤 무기든 사용할 수 있는 인물이다. 그는 대가이자 전설이자 멘토이므로, 가까이에 있는 어떤 도구도 무기로 사용할 수 있을 것이라고 생각했다"고 설명했다. "비디오 게임에서 보일 법한 무기를 사용하는 액션 장면이 흥미로울 것 같다"고 덧붙였다.
"만티스"는 금요일에 스트리밍 플랫폼에서 공개될 예정이다.
