No Korean will compete in the final of the men's speed event Thursday at the ongoing sport climbing world championships on home soil.
Shin Eun-cheol finished as the top Korean in 19th place in the men's speed qualification of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Climbing World Championships at Olympic Park in southeastern Seoul. Only the top 16 of the 63 climbers in action advanced to the final, scheduled for Thursday evening.
In speed climbing, the goal is to reach the top of a 15-meter wall as quickly as possible. Of his two attempts, Shin's fastest time was 5.161 seconds.
Jung Yong-jun was the next best Korean at No. 20 with a time of 5.199 seconds. Choi Jong-bin (46th) and Lee Yong-su (48th) ended well out of contention.
Zach Hammer of the United States topped the qualification with a time of 4.809 seconds. The defending champion from Italy, Matteo Zurloni, was sixth with a time of 4.996 seconds.
Korea has never won a world championships medal in speed climbing. Jeong Ji-min came close in the women's event Wednesday night when she finished in fourth place.
The world championships will continue Friday with the semifinals and finals in the men's and women's lead events. Lee Do-hyun in the men's event and Seo Chae-hyun in the women's event are medal hopefuls for Korea.

다음으로 좋은 성적을 올린 한국 선수는 20위의 정용준으로, 그의 기록은 5.199초였다.
최종빈(46위)과 이종수(48위)는 경쟁에서 멀리 벗어난 성적을 기록했다.
미국의 잭 해머가 4.809초로 1위를 차지했고, 이탈리아의 defending champion인 마테오 줄로니는 4.996초로 6위를 기록했다.
한국은 스피드 종목에서 세계 선수권 대회 메달을 단 한 번도 획득한 적이 없다. 여성 부문에서는 정지민이 수요일 밤 4위로 아쉬운 성적을 남겼다.
세계 선수권 대회는 금요일에 남녀 리드 종목의 준결승 및 결승으로 계속된다. 남자 부문에서 이도현과 여자 부문에서 서채현이 한국의 메달 기대주이다.
