President Lee Jae Myung on Sunday pledged to pursue a significant defense reform aimed at establishing a smart and independent military capable of safeguarding the nation from invasions, rather than depending solely on troop numbers.
In a post on his Facebook account, Lee acknowledged the serious population issue and current insufficiencies in troop resources, but reassured that there is no need to worry about defense capabilities based on troop comparisons alone.
Lee argued that a small number of personnel equipped with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) combat robots, autonomous drones, and precise missile systems can effectively oppose larger enemy forces. He advocated for the transformation of the military into a "smart" and professional entity.
Addressing South Korea's defense capabilities in contrast to North Korea's, Lee highlighted the nation's 2.6 million reserve forces ready for combat and emphasized that South Korea ranks fifth globally in terms of defense capabilities.
The President called for an increase in defense spending and the development of a smart military, alongside nurturing the domestic arms industry and enhancing security diplomacy to ensure the nation is never invaded.
He also pointed out the necessity of building robust and autonomous defense capabilities in light of a global shift toward competition and armed conflict following an extended period of peace.
Additionally, Lee rejected what he described as a "submissive" mindset suggesting that effective defense capabilities are unachievable without reliance on foreign forces.

이 대통령은 자신의 페이스북 계정에 업데이트된 글에서 "인구 문제는 심각하고 가까운 시일 내 병력 자원이 부족하다는 것은 사실이지만, 정규군의 숫자만 비교하더라도 우리의 국방 능력에 대해 걱정할 필요는 없다"고 말했다.
그는 "인공지능(AI) 전투 로봇, 자율 드론 및 정밀 공격 및 방어 미사일 시스템을 갖춘 50명이 만 명 이상의 적을 상대할 수 있다"고 언급하며, 첨단 기술로 무장한 '스마트' 전문 군대로의 전환을 촉구했다.
북한의 국방 능력과 비교하며 이 대통령은 한국이 언제든지 전투에 투입될 준비가 된 260만 명의 예비군을 보유하고 있으며, 국방 능력에서 세계 5위에 해당한다고 강조했다.
그는 국방 지출을 더욱 늘리고 스마트 군대를 구축하며, 국내 방산 산업을 육성하고 안보 외교를 강화하여 결코 침략당하지 않는 나라를 만들 것을 촉구했다.
이 대통령은 인류 역사에서 가장 긴 평화와 공존의 기간을 지나며 세계가 경쟁과 무장 충돌로 나아가는 시기에 강력하고 자주적인 방어 능력의 중요성을 강조했다.
한편, 그는 외국 세력 없이는 이러한 방어 능력이 실현될 수 없다는 '복종적인' 태도를 일축했다.
