High school pitcher Park Jun-hyun, son of former star third baseman Park Sok-min, was selected first overall at the annual Korean baseball draft on Wednesday.
The junior Park, a senior pitcher for Bugil High School in Cheonan, approximately 90 kilometers south of Seoul, was picked by the Kiwoom Heroes. The 18-year-old right-hander has recorded a 2.63 ERA in 40 2/3 innings this season, achieving 54 strikeouts against 14 walks, with a 2-1 record. He has reached speeds of 157 kph with his fastball.
His father, who played 20 seasons in the KBO from 2004 to 2023, won five Korean Series titles with the Samsung Lions and a sixth with the NC Dinos in 2020. Widely regarded as one of the best third basemen of his generation, he earned Golden Glove awards in 2014 and 2015, finishing his career with 269 home runs, 1,041 RBIs, and a .287/.402/.491 batting line over 1,697 games.
Earlier this year, media reports alleged that Park Jun-hyun had bullied his teammates in high school. However, he was cleared by the regional education office due to a lack of evidence. The Heroes expressed confidence in drafting the pitcher, noting that the accusations had not been substantiated.
The Heroes also believed that if Park had concerns regarding his past, he would have opted to skip the KBO draft in favor of an apparent offer from the Athletics in Major League Baseball. Upon entering the draft, Park signed a declaration stating that he had not committed any wrongdoing at school.
With two other top pitching prospects, Kim Seong-jun and Moon Seo-jun, having signed with the Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays respectively, Park was considered a clear choice for the top pick.
The selection order was determined by the reverse finish of the 2024 regular season. The NC Dinos selected infielder Shin Jae-in from Yushin High School with the second pick. Shin, regarded as the top hitting prospect in this year's class, has batted .337 in 26 games, hitting four home runs, driving in 30 RBIs, and stealing 13 bases.
Shin's high school teammate, center fielder Oh Jae-won, was chosen by the Hanwha Eagles as the No. 3 pick. Oh has stolen 32 bases in 26 games while batting .442 with 19 walks against eight strikeouts.
Dongsan High School pitcher Shin Dong-kun was selected fourth overall by the Lotte Giants, while Daegu High School pitcher Kim Min-jun went to the SSG Landers with the fifth pick. The KT Wiz drafted Jeonju High School pitcher Park Ji-hun with the sixth pick, followed by the Doosan Bears selecting Masan Yongma High School outfielder Kim Ju-oh at seventh.
Gyeonggi Aviation High School pitcher Yang Woo-jin was drafted by the LG Twins at No. 8, and Seoul High School right-hander Lee Ho-beom went to the Samsung Lions with the ninth pick. The Kia Tigers, who had the best regular-season record last year, traded their first-round pick to the Heroes in exchange for reliever Cho Sang-woo in December. The Heroes completed the top 10 by drafting Jeonju High School infielder Park Han-gyeol.
A record four position players were selected in the first round.

18세의 우완 투수인 박준현은 이번 시즌 40과 2/3 이닝에서 2.63의 방어율을 기록했으며, 54개의 삼진과 14개의 볼넷을 기록하며 2승 1패의 성적을 보였다. 그의 직구는 시속 157km에 이른다.
그의 아버지인 박석민은 2004년부터 2023년까지 KBO에서 20시즌을 활약하며 삼성 라이온즈 소속으로 2005년, 그리고 2011년부터 2014년까지 5차례 한국시리즈 우승을 차지했고, 2020년에는 NC 다이노스에서도 6번째 반지를 추가했다. 그는 자신의 세대에서 가장 훌륭한 3루수 중 한 명으로 손꼽히며, 2014년과 2015년에 골든 글러브를 수상하였다. 그는 1,697경기에서 269개의 홈런, 1,041개의 타점 및 .287/.402/.491의 기록을 남겼다.
올해 초, 언론 보도에 따르면 박준현이 고등학교에서 동급생들을 괴롭혔다는 주장이 제기되었으나, 교육청에 의해 증거 부족으로 무혐의 처분을 받았다. 히어로즈는 그에 대한 혐의가 입증되지 않았기 때문에 드래프트에 관계없이 지명하는 데에 문제가 없다고 밝혔다.
히어로즈 측은 박준현이 과거에 대한 우려가 있었다면 KBO 드래프트를 건너뛰고 메이저 리그 베이스볼의 Athletics로부터 제의를 받아들였을 것이라고 믿고 있다.
드래프트에 임하는 박준현은 학교에서의 잘못된 행위가 없었음을 선언하는 서명도 했다.
또한, 두 명의 다른 유망한 투수인 김성준과 문서준이 각각 텍사스 레인저스와 토론토 블루제이스에 지명되었기 때문에 박준현은 당연한 1순위 지명으로 평가받았다.
지명 순서는 2024 정규 시즌의 역순으로 결정되었다.
2순위에서는 NC 다이노스가 유신 고등학교 내야수 신재인을 선택하였다. 올해 클래스에서 최고의 타격 유망주로 평가받는 신재인은 26경기에서 .337의 타율을 기록하며 4개의 홈런, 30개의 타점 및 13개의 도루를 기록했다. 그는 122타석에서 18개의 볼넷을 얻고, 단 10번만 삼진을 당했다.
신재인의 고등학교 동료인 중앙 수비수 오재원은 3순위로 한화 이글스에 지명되었다. 그는 올해 26경기에서 32개의 도루를 기록하며 .442의 타율을 올렸고, 19개의 볼넷을 얻어 8개의 삼진을 기록했다.
동산 고등학교 투수 신동쿤은 롯데 자이언츠에 4순위로 지명되었고, 대구 고등학교 투수 김민준은 SSG 랜더스에 5순위로 선택되었다.
KT 위즈는 전주 고등학교 투수 박지헌을 6순위로 지명하였고, 두산 베어스는 마산 용마 고등학교 외야수 김주오를 7순위로 선택하였다.
경기항공고등학교 투수 양우진은 LG 트윈스에 8순위로 지명되었고, 서울 고등학교 우완 투수 이호범은 삼성 라이온즈에 9순위로 선택되었다.
지난해 최고의 정규 시즌 팀이었던 기아 타이거즈는 지난해 12월 히어로즈와 교환하여 첫 번째 1라운드 지명을 트레이트하였다. 1라운드에서 히어로즈는 전주 고등학교 내야수 박한결을 마지막으로 10위로 지명하여 채웠다.
