High jumper Woo Sang-hyeok expressed gratitude for winning a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, considering his recent injury challenges. He returned home two days after the event, where he cleared 2.34 meters, finishing second to New Zealand's Hamish Kerr, who achieved a height of 2.36 meters.
Prior to the championships, Woo had maintained an undefeated streak in seven international competitions. However, his season faced difficulties in August when he sustained a calf injury that sidelined him for five weeks. Although he recovered in time for the championships, he incurred an ankle injury during the qualification round.
Despite not being at full strength, Woo managed to compete closely with Kerr, the reigning Olympic gold medalist. "I went hard during the qualification because I had to perform well there to get to the final," Woo stated, reflecting on his experience. "I just tried to compete as hard as I could and have no regrets at the end." He described his achievement as a "miracle," given the circumstances.
Initially aiming for the world title, Woo adjusted his expectations due to his injuries. He mentioned discussions with his coach about focusing on enjoying the competition, which ultimately led to his success. Woo is now recognized as the first Korean athlete to earn multiple medals at world championships, although no Korean has yet won a world title.
Earlier this year, Woo had secured the world indoor title and aimed to become the second male high jumper to win both the world indoor and outdoor championships in the same year, following Javier Sotomayor in 1993. In the final, Woo and Kerr were the last two competitors remaining, but after failing to clear 2.36 meters, Kerr succeeded on his first attempt.
After the competition, Kerr acknowledged their friendship, stating, "It's hard. We are such good friends that when we are really competing, I feel bad because I want to win, but I also want him to do his best as possible." Woo noted that competing against Kerr made the final "extra special" and expressed hope for better performance had he not been injured.
At 29 years old, Woo remains focused on future competitions, including the Asian Games in 2026, the world championships in 2027, and the Olympics in 2028. He stated, "I've only won silver medals at world championships and Asian Games. And I've not yet won an Olympic medal. I will keep going and putting on good performances."

우는 종아리 부상 이전의 목표가 세계 타이틀 획득이었지만, 스스로 '사소한' 부상이라고 부른 부상으로 목표를 조정하게 되었다고 설명했다.
"코치와 함께 경기를 즐기고 기회가 오면 그것을 잡으라고 이야기했다"며 "자신에 대한 의심 없이 임하겠다고 다짐했고 결국 좋은 결과를 얻었다"고 말했다.
우는 이제 세계 선수권 대회에서 경력을 쌓은 한국인 최초의 다수 메달리스트가 되었으며, 한국인 중 세계 타이틀을 획득한 이는 없었다.
우는 올해 3월 세계 실내 타이틀을 획득했으며, 1993년 하비에르 소토마요르 이후 두 번째로 같은 해에 세계 실내 및 야외 두 타이틀을 모두 차지하려 했다.
최종 결승에서 우와 커르는 마지막 두 점퍼였다. 우가 2.36미터를 넘지 못한 후, 커르는 첫 번째 시도에서 높이를 넘었다.
