Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae is scheduled to address allegations against him from political circles on Wednesday, according to a court official. This announcement comes amid increasing calls from the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) for his resignation.
Cho is expected to make a statement at 6 p.m., following accusations from Rep. Boo Seung-chan. The allegations suggest that Cho made remarks undermining the court's impartiality during an alleged luncheon with former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo in April, just months before the election of President Lee Jae Myung.
During the purported meeting on April 7, three days after the Constitutional Court upheld former President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment, Cho allegedly indicated that Lee's case would be handled by the Supreme Court. At that time, Lee was awaiting a Supreme Court ruling regarding charges of election law violations.
In response to the allegations, an official close to Han denied that any meeting or meal took place between Han and Cho, asserting that there is no personal relationship between the two.
Calls for Cho's resignation have intensified, led by DPK leader Jung Chung-rae and other lawmakers, who accuse him of protecting individuals involved in Yoon's unsuccessful martial law attempt by delaying their trials.

조 대법원장은 4월 7일의 회의에서 이 전 대통령의 사건은 대법원에서 다뤄질 것이라고 말했다고 전해진다. 이 발언은 헌법재판소가 윤석열 전 대통령의 탄핵을 인정한 지 3일 후에 이루어진 것이다. 당시 이 전 대통령은 선거법 위반 혐의로 대법원의 판결을 기다리고 있었다.
한편, 한 전 총리 측근은 그가 조 대법원장과 회의나 식사를 한 적이 없다고 부인하며, 개인적인 관계가 없음을 강조했다.
최근 조 대법원장은 더불어민주당의 정청래 대표와 다른 의원들로부터 사퇴 압박을 받고 있으며, 이들은 그가 윤 전 대통령의 계엄령 시도에 연루된 인물들을 보호하기 위해 재판을 지연시키고 있다고 주장하고 있다.
